Simplified design method of cold-formed steel columns with built-up box sections

Xuhong Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the buckling behavior and ultimate strength of axially loaded pin-ended cold-formed steel built-up box section columns, considering the effects of local and local-flexural interactive buckling modes. Experimental and theoretical research were conducted, and a simplified design method was proposed based on test results and numerical analysis. The study highlights the importance of factors such as slenderness ratio, web depth-to-thickness ratio, and screw spacing in determining the ultimate strength of built-up columns.

Design of cold-formed steel built-up columns subjected to local-global interactive buckling using direct strength method

Sivaganesh Selvaraj et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the structural behavior of doubly-symmetric built-up cold-formed steel columns that fail in local-global interactive buckling modes. A total of 45 column tests were conducted, revealing that the axial ultimate strengths of the built-up columns are influenced by individual channel section buckling and unstiffened flange elements. The study also shows that the effect of intermediate spacing depends on the failure mode of the CFS built-up cross-sections.

Tests and design of built-up section columns

Dang Khoa Phan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the strength and behavior of built-up section columns composed of three or four lipped channel sections. It was found that singly-symmetric columns typically experienced local, distortional, and/or flexural-torsional buckling failure modes, while doubly-symmetric columns usually failed in local, distortional, and/or flexural buckling modes. The research proposed a design procedure for built-up sections experiencing flexural-torsional buckling, which is not explicitly stipulated in current design standards or previous studies.
