Dynamic compressive response of 3D GFRP composites with shear thickening fluid (STF) matrix as cushioning materials

Mohsen Jeddi et al.

Summary: The study found that adding STF matrix can enhance the compressive and cushioning performance of GFRP composites, with further improvement observed as the concentration of STF increases. However, the performance of high-concentration composites decreased further under repeated impact testing.

Behaviour of continuous fibre composite sandwich core under low-velocity impact

Sartip Zangana et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing core thickness improved impact capacity, while increasing core height decreased sandwich strength. Finite element analysis simulated the damage status and mechanism of the novel composite core sandwich. The multi-cell composite corrugated core increased impact capacity, and the trapezoidal composite corrugated sandwich core showed higher specific strength compared to traditional honeycomb, truss, and foam cores.

A review of properties and fabrication techniques of fiber reinforced polymer nanocomposites subjected to simulated accidental ballistic impact

Usaid Ahmed Shakil et al.

Summary: Composite structures experience ballistic or high velocity impact loading during flight operations due to hail, bird, and debris strikes. The ballistic performance of materials is characterized by delamination resistance and energy absorption, with microstructural modification of the matrix being the primary method to improve composite ballistic performance. High specific surface area nanoparticles are now being used for matrix modification to induce nano-scale toughness mechanisms.

Crushing behaviors of the thin-walled sandwich column under axial load

Yubo Hou et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new design method for the sandwich column, and validates the accuracy of this design method through experiments and numerical analysis. The study finds that the geometrical characteristics of the sandwich column have a significant impact on its crashworthiness. The results show that the sandwich column with specific design parameters has the greatest energy absorption capacity.

Effect of bias yarn on tensile fracture mechanism of multiaxial 3D angle-interlock woven composites

Qiwei Guo et al.

Summary: A novel 3D woven structure, named multiaxial 3D angle-interlock woven composites (MAWC), was designed and developed in this paper. Experimental characterization and modeling were used to investigate the tensile behavior and failure mechanisms of MAWCs and 3D angle-interlock woven composites. Results showed that the axial tensile strength of MAWCs decreased due to the change of yarn orientation, and different stress-strain curves were observed for MAWCs and 3DAWC.

Experimental and numerical investigation of open-hole tensile properties and damage mechanisms of 3D woven composites under weft-loading

Qiwei Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of notch size on the tensile properties of circular notched 3D woven composite plates, showing that while the notch size had little impact on tensile stiffness, the tensile strength decreased with increasing aperture. Stress concentration was mainly at the hole edge, with the main failure mode shifting from fiber pull-out to breakage as the aperture increased.
