Numerical study on full-field stress evolution and acoustic emission characteristics of rocks containing three parallel pre-existing flaws under uniaxial compression

Xunjian Hu et al.

Summary: A linear parallel bond model combined with Weibull distribution is used to investigate the cracking behavior and stress evolution of rocks containing three parallel flaws under uniaxial compression. The presence of flaws weakens the mechanical properties of rocks and leads to tensile stress concentration around the flaws. The interaction of displacement localization zones formed around flaws complicates the damage or fracture processes of pre-cracked samples.

Fracture analysis of central-flawed rock-like specimens under the influence of coplanar or non-coplanar edge flaws

Zhizhen Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of edge flaws on the fracture behaviors of central-flawed specimens. The results showed that non-coplanar edge flaws had a more significant effect on the peak strength, elastic modulus, and crack initiation angle than coplanar edge flaws. The central flaw controlled the initiation of new cracks, while the edge flaws influenced the propagation trajectories of new cracks.

Summary: The determination of fracture mode and initiation mechanism of cracks in rocks is crucial for understanding the failure process. This research conducted Brazilian tests on sandstone specimens with preexisting flaws and proposed a criterion to accurately determine fracture mode and initiation mechanism. The influence of flaw inclination angle on fracture mode and initiation mechanism was discussed based on microscopic and macroscopic observation.

Dynamic mechanical behaviors of pre-fractured sandstone with noncoplanar and unparallel flaws

Peng Feng et al.

Summary: The static and dynamic mechanical behaviors of sandstone with noncoplanar and unparallel flaws were systematically investigated in this study. It was demonstrated that the strength, fractal characteristics, and energy dissipation of the pre-fractured sandstone showed a dependence on loading rate. The dynamic strength of unparallel-flawed sandstones was found to be more sensitive to strain rate compared to that of noncoplanar-flawed sandstones. The failure modes of the specimens were primarily controlled by tensile cracks under static compression, while shear cracks had a greater effect on the dynamic failure patterns. Under low dynamic strain rates, the specimens mainly broke into columnar or lamellar structures with a significantly non-uniform size distribution and relatively small amount of energy dissipation. At high dynamic strain rates, the flawed rocks experienced severe damage and broke into many small fragments with relatively uniform sizes, accompanied by comparably high energy dissipation.

Experimental and DEM study on failure behavior and stress distribution of flawed sandstone specimens under uniaxial compression

Yan-Hua Huang et al.

Summary: Rock materials with pre-existing flaws have a significant impact on the stability of rock engineering. This study conducted uniaxial compression tests and numerical simulations on sandstone specimens with various inclination angles of pre-existing flaws. The results showed that the pre-existing flaws influenced the stress-strain curves, mechanical parameters, acoustic emission, and failure patterns of the specimens.

Failure and mechanical behavior of transversely isotropic rock under compression-shear tests: Laboratory testing and numerical simulation

Ri-hong Cao et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical tests were conducted to investigate the fracture characteristics of transversely isotropic rock under planar shear fracture loading, focusing on the influence of bedding plane inclination, strength, and spacing on fracture loads and patterns. The results showed that inclination angles, strength, and spacing of the bedding planes significantly affect the fracture load and pattern, with higher bedding plane strength resulting in higher fracture loads and different fracture patterns.

Summary: Numerical study shows that grouting can improve the mechanical properties of rock samples by reducing tensile force, suppressing crack generation, and increasing initiation stress, leading to higher peak strength. Moreover, bridge inclination angle and flaw inclination angle also have an impact on crack development and mechanical properties of samples.

Effects of the lining structure on mechanical and fracturing behaviors of four-arc shaped tunnels in a jointed rock mass under uniaxial compression

Xiang Fan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on shallow-buried tunnels in layered rock masses, conducting a series of tests on physical models with different combinations of joints and high-strength gypsum tubes to explore fracturing characteristics and the impact on lining structures. Using a particle-based discrete element method, the influences of linings on stress distribution in surrounding rock, lining around tunnels, and displacement fields in models were investigated. The supporting effect of linings on tunnel stability was evaluated.

Local stress distribution and evolution surrounding flaw and opening within rock block under uniaxial compression

Xiang Fan et al.

Summary: Tunnel excavation alters the stress state, leading to rock fractures, with research focusing on stress and displacement evaluation around openings. Flaws and openings significantly affect internal stress within the rock mass, concentrating stress around specific positions. When flaws and openings coexist, there is interaction of internal stress. This study used the PFC program to analyze stress evolution around flaws and openings, presenting stress distributions and principal stress evolutions in different loading stages and orientations. The numerical method proposed can be valuable in evaluating local stress distribution and evolution surrounding flaws and openings.

Experimental and numerical investigation on crack mechanism of folded flawed rock-like material under uniaxial compression

Wenchen Fan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the failure mechanism of rock masses with overlapped fissures by conducting uniaxial compressive tests and numerical studies on Portland cement samples containing folded flaws of different dip angles and undulation angles. Results show that the deformational curves of specimens containing folded flaws exhibit two patterns, and five different failure modes were observed. The folded flaw can still resist shear stress after crack coalescence, contributing to the residual peak strength in stress-displacement curves. The findings provide a better understanding of the failure mechanism of rock masses with folded fractures.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the influences of pre-stress ratio, flaw inclination angle, and strain rate on the dynamic progressive cracking mechanism and energy evolution of multi-flawed rocks. The experimental results show that the dynamic/total strength generally increases with increasing strain rate, decreases with increasing flaw inclination angle, and exhibits complex changes with increasing pre-stress ratio.
