Modeling of damage and cracking in heterogeneous rock-like materials by phase-field method

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a phase-field method was used to model damage and cracking in rock-like materials, taking into account the spatial variability of material heterogeneities. The effective elastic properties of rocks were determined as functions of mineral compositions using a linear homogenization method. The onset and propagation of localized cracks were investigated through a series of numerical specimens, with comparisons made between numerical results and experimental data for overall stress-strain responses.

Underlying Mechanisms of Crack Initiation for Granitic Rocks Containing a Single Pre-existing Flaw: Insights From Digital Image Correlation (DIC) Analysis

Liwang Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel method to quantitatively determine the crack initiation mechanism in granitic samples using digital image correlation (DIC) analysis. The research found that with the increase of inclination angles, the crack initiation mechanisms changed, with wing cracks transitioning from mixed mode I/II cracks to mode I cracks, and anti-wing cracks remaining dominated by mode II cracks.

An improved form of smoothed particle hydrodynamics method for crack propagation simulation applied in rock mechanics

Shuyang Yu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new numerical method called improved kernel of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (IKSPH) to simulate crack propagation processes in rock engineering. By enhancing the kernel function and introducing a particle domain searching method (PDSM), the efficiency of the IKSPH method is validated through numerical examples, demonstrating its potential in accurately representing crack morphology and behavior in complex rock structures.

Double-phase-field formulation for mixed-mode fracture in rocks

Fan Fei et al.

Summary: The proposed double-phase-field formulation combines two different phase fields to describe cohesive tensile fracture and frictional shear fracture in rocks. It allows for direct use of material strengths measured from experiments and can naturally distinguish between different fracture modes. The validation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the model in simulating mixed-mode fractures in rocks.

Summary: The study presents a two-step modeling method to simulate the damage and fracture mechanisms of concrete using continuous random fields generated based on real microscale X-ray CT images, and validates the method through Monte Carlo simulations. The method shows promise for efficiently evaluating structural reliability by capturing mesoscale fracture processes and crack paths.

Summary: In this study, experiments and numerical simulations were used to investigate the failure process of concrete, analyzing the characteristics of cracks and obtaining force-CMOD and force-deflection curves. The phase field (PF) damage model was applied to study the failure processes of concrete structures, and the numerical results were consistent with experimental and calculated results of other researchers.

Summary: This study determined the range of microparameters in the discrete-element method through sensitivity analysis and established a microparameter prediction model using five data mining methods. The results suggest that machine learning methods have significant potential in determining the relationship between macro and microparameters of the DEM model, with RFR model achieving the best performance and the deviation between predicted and measured macroparameters being less than 8%.

Parameter Checking Method of Large Scale Particle Model

Chao Peng et al.

Summary: This paper proposed a parameter checking method for large-scale models for the first time, which was validated through large tunnel model tests. The research results showed that using parameters checked by small models can increase the mechanical strength of large models, especially with greater impact on the failure mode.
