Estimating the expansion of urban areas and urban heat islands (UHI) in Ghana: a case study

Summary: This study focused on identifying urban sprawl patterns and their impact on the heat island effect in Accra and Kumasi, Ghana. Using remote sensing imagery, it was found that urban expansion was more prominent in both cities compared to densification. The results showed that the presence and expansion of urban heat islands were significant, with bare lands and sparsely vegetated areas contributing to higher surface temperatures.
