Mesozoic building of the Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar (NW China) revealed by low-temperature thermochronology

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: The Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar regions underwent moderate to rapid basement cooling during the Cretaceous, likely due to far-field effects of accretion and collision along the south Eurasia margin. The East Junggar experienced cooling events from the late Permian to Early Jurassic, possibly related to post-orogenic transpression along major faults and distal effects of the Qiangtang-Eurasia collision. Combined with existing evidence, it is suggested that there was no significant exhumation in the Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar during the Cenozoic.

Structural and kinematic evolution of strike-slip shear zones around and in the Central Tianshan: Insights for eastward tectonic wedging in the southwest Central Asian Orogenic Belt

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the Xiaergou and Wulasitai shear zones in the southwestern Central Asian Orogenic Belt experienced dextral and sinistral shearing during the Late Paleozoic. The formation of these shear zones is closely related to the eastward tectonic wedging and relative rotations between continental blocks in the Central Tianshan region.

Cooling and exhumation of the Late Paleozoic Tulasu epithermal gold system, Western Tianshan, NW China: implications for preservation of Pre-Mesozoic epithermal deposits

Xiao-Bo Zhao et al.

Summary: Epithermal gold deposits are rarely well preserved in pre-Mesozoic terranes due to their low-temperature mineralization, but significant Late Paleozoic deposits have been found in the Tulasu volcanic basin in NW China. By analyzing new age data and performing modeling, it was revealed that the rapid burial by thick sediments and slow protracted exhumation were crucial for the preservation of the Paleozoic epithermal gold system at Tulasu.

Long-term topographic evolution of the Central Tianshan (NW China) constrained by low-temperature thermochronology

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: This study provides insights into the evolution of intra-continental deformation in the Chinese Central Tianshan region from the Mesozoic to the present, revealing regional slow to moderate cooling during most of the Mesozoic and the significant role of Cenozoic uplift and erosion in shaping the present-day topography. The findings suggest that the Chinese Central Tianshan did not undergo intensive relief building during its long-term Mesozoic evolution, and that regional brittle faults may have played a key role in influencing intra-continental deformation processes.

Structural, Kinematic and Geochronological Study of the Main Tianshan Shear Zone in the Borohoro Ranges, NW China

Liu Tianlun et al.

Summary: The western segment of the Main Tianshan shear zone in northwestern China branches into three major dextral strike-slip shear zones, with a dextral displacement of less than 100 km. Zircon dating suggests that dextral shearing may have started in the earliest Permian, while plate collision and tectonic transformation likely occurred between 325 and 300 Ma.

Burial and exhumation of late paleozoic arc-related rocks in the Tulasu basin, Western Chinese Tianshan: Implication for the preservation of epithermal deposits in old orogenic belts

Yannan Wang et al.

Summary: Epithermal deposits are vulnerable to erosion due to their shallow emplacement depth, most of which are formed in the Cenozoic era globally. Large epithermal deposits associated with Late-Devonian to Carboniferous magmatism were found in western Chinese Tianshan. AFT analysis showed multiple burial and exhumation episodes for the ore-hosting basin, with initial burial in the Late Carboniferous and Permian periods.

Summary: The study in the Karatau and Talas ranges reveals three phases of late Paleozoic-Mesozoic deformation and exhumation, indicating extensive Mesozoic erosional signatures in response to Eurasian amalgamation of Central Asia and progressive closure of the Tethys Ocean.
