The Growth of Earthquake Clusters

Tomas Fischer et al.

Summary: Migration of earthquake clusters is often characterized by spreading envelopes and fast-growing streaks. Examining cluster growth as a function of event index, rather than time, may be more appropriate for earthquake-driven migration. A proposed model relating seismicity spreading speed to rupture area and hypocenter magnitude showed nearly linear increase in rupture area with event index. Self-similar scaling of average rupture area with effective magnitude suggests presence of voids along fault plane and possible aseismic deformation.

Seismic evidence of fluid migration in northeastern Japan after the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake

Qing-Yu Wang et al.

Summary: Using ambient-noise-based seismic monitoring, we detected an anomalous seismic velocity decrease in Honshu about one year after the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, suggesting a possible relation to volcanic processes and internal physical changes. Tiltmeter observations revealed temporal variations correlated with velocity changes, supporting the hypothesis of actual physical deformation in the crust. The observed decrease in fault strength and concurrent increase in low-frequency events in the volcanic area further indicate changes in physical properties and an increase in pore pressure in the upper crust.
