Threshold versus intensity functions in two-colour automated perimetry

Matthew P. Simunovic et al.

Summary: The study found that in two-color perimetry, there is a transition from rod to cone detection with 480 nm stimuli under scotopic conditions, while there is no clear rod-cone break with 640 nm stimuli. Cone detection mechanisms do not display Weber-like adaptation until the background luminance is higher.

Threshold vision under full-field stimulation: Revisiting the minimum number of quanta necessary to evoke a visual sensation

Ashim Dey et al.

Summary: The study investigates the difference in perception between absolute threshold vision and full-field stimulation under scotopic conditions, finding that vision is more sensitive under full-field stimulation. A summation model is presented to explain inter-study differences and estimate rods per photon ratio for any stimulus size and duration.

Light adaptation characteristics of melanopsin

Mukund Pant et al.

Summary: Post-bleach, melanopsin regeneration is slower than cone-opsin regeneration, taking longer to fully recover. Melanopsin excitation during light adaptation enhances cone-directed pupil constriction, increasing cone signaling along the non-visual retina-brain axis.

Assessing Photoreceptor Status in Retinal Dystrophies: From High-Resolution Imaging to Functional Vision

Jose-Alain Sahel et al.

Summary: The study found a weak correlation between visual acuity and retinal structural variables, while functional impairment was associated with reduction in anatomical markers of photoreceptor structure and increased width of autofluorescent ring. Flood-illumination adaptive optics imaging revealed various phenotypes, and mobility assessment under different lighting conditions showed correlations with visual field, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and dark adaptation.

Partial recovery of visual function in a blind patient after optogenetic therapy

Jose-Alain Sahel et al.

Summary: Optogenetics combined with engineered goggles enabled partial recovery of visual function in a blind patient, as demonstrated by object-related brain activity recorded through electroencephalography. This represents the first reported case of partial functional recovery in a neurodegenerative disease after optogenetic therapy.

A Virtual Reality Orientation and Mobility Test for Inherited Retinal Degenerations: Testing a Proof-of-Concept After Gene Therapy

Tomas S. Aleman et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using a virtual reality orientation and mobility test to assess the impact of visual dysfunction and improvement following treatments in patients with inherited retinal degenerations. The VR-O&M system proved useful, particularly in challenging scenarios such as pediatric patients with severe IRDs.

Are Current Methods of Measuring Dark Adaptation Effective in Detecting the Onset and Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration? A Systematic Literature Review

Bethany E. Higgins et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the relationship between impaired dark adaptation and AMD, finding a strong association that worsened with AMD severity. Data on the repeatability and reproducibility of dark adaptation measurement were limited, with evidence suggesting that structural abnormalities such as reticular drusen are associated with prolonged dark adaptation time. Fewer studies have explored the relationship between dark adaptation and other measures of visual function or patient-reported outcome measures. No studies have compared dark adaptation with performance-based measures.
