TiC-TiSi2-Al2O3 composite coatings prepared by spray drying, heat treatment and plasma spraying

Yu-duo Ma et al.

Summary: An innovative approach to improve the quality of TiC-TiSi2-Al2O3 composite coating was demonstrated in this study. The results showed that the coating obtained by plasma spraying heat-treated Al-TiO2-SiC composite powders had the highest bonding strength, microhardness, and fracture toughness among the three coatings, indicating the effectiveness of the heat treatment process in enhancing the properties of the coatings.

A novel Ni2MnCuSnAl0.1 multi-principal element alloy coating to enhance the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of Mg-Li alloy

Xin Wen et al.

Summary: A novel Ni2MnCuSnAl0.1 multi-principal element alloy coating and a multi-step ultrasonic assisted laser cladding technique were proposed to overcome the deficiencies of evaporation and dilution of substrate in laser-cladded coatings on Mg-Li alloys. The synthesized Ni2MnCuSnAl0.1 MPEA coatings on Mg-Li alloy exhibited improved corrosion resistance, hardness, and wear resistance compared to the Mg-Li alloy.

Optimizing the resistance of Ni-advanced weathering steel to marine atmospheric corrosion with the addition of Al or Mo

Xuexu Xu et al.

Summary: The self-designed Ni-advanced weathering steels alloyed with Al and Mo were found to have improved corrosion resistance, especially when Mo is added compared to Al. The addition of Mo can lead to the formation of a thicker protective rust layer, which effectively resists Cl intrusion due to the presence of MoO2 and MoO3 that prevent the degradation of NiFe2O4. On the other hand, the Al-enriched particles are unable to block Cl intrusion but can help in filling the pores and cracks in the rust layer, making it more compact and increasing its resistance.

Synergy of Cu and Sb to enhance the resistance of 3%Ni weathering steel to marine atmospheric corrosion

Wei Wu et al.

Summary: The incorporation of 0.5% Cu and 0.2% Sb into 3% Ni steel showed a synergistic effect in enhancing corrosion resistance by optimizing the properties of the corrosion product film. This synergy resulted in a thicker inner layer enriched with Cu, Sb, and Ni, significantly improving the compactness, phase composition, elemental distribution, and electrochemical activity of the CPF.

Microstructure and properties of Cr7C3-CrSi2 composite coatings prepared by plasma spraying

Yu-duo Ma et al.

Summary: The in-situ Cr7C3-CrSi2 composite coating was fabricated from Cr-SiC composite powders using the plasma spraying process. The mechanical properties and formation mechanism were investigated, showing that using Cr-SiC composite powders resulted in a coating with higher density and more homogeneous microstructure distribution compared to using Cr7C3-CrSi2 composite powders. The excellent performance of the coating obtained by the Cr-SiC system was mainly attributed to its finer, denser, and more uniform microstructure.

Influence of grain refinement on the corrosion behavior of metallic materials: A review

Pan-jun Wang et al.

Summary: Grain refinement can enhance mechanical properties but may not always improve corrosion resistance; there is still no consensus on how grain size affects corrosion behavior; microstructural changes resulting from grain refinement have a significant impact on corrosion behavior.

Distinct beneficial effect of Sn on the corrosion resistance of Cr-Mo low alloy steel

Meihui Sun et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the addition of Sn improves the corrosion resistance of Cr-Mo low alloy steel mainly by influencing microstructural transformation, leading to enhanced protection and stability of the rust layer. The synergistic effect of Sn, Cr, and Mo also provides ion selectivity to the inner rust layer, preventing Cl- penetration and inhibiting localized corrosion of the steel.

Pavan Bijalwan et al.

Summary: The Fe-based composite coatings deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying showed better corrosion resistance compared to the steel substrate, regardless of the coating thickness. The coating with a thickness of 110 +/- 12 μm exhibited the best corrosion resistance, attributed to optimal content of amorphous, porosity, and surface roughness.
