Carbon dioxide emissions prediction of five Middle Eastern countries using artificial neural networks

Mohammad Hossein Ahmadi et al.

Summary: In this study, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach called Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) was used to model carbon dioxide emissions based on shares of energy sources and GDP in five countries: Iran, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and UAE. The results showed that the ANN model accurately predicted CO2 emissions, with an average absolute relative error of 2.3% and an R-squared value of 0.9998.

A Bayesian stochastic generator to complement existing climate change scenarios: supporting uncertainty quantification in marine and coastal ecosystems

Lorinc Meszaros et al.

Summary: A methodology is proposed to generate additional synthetic climate change scenarios to better represent uncertainties, using existing data sets and Regional Climate Model scenarios. The methodology utilizes a hierarchical Bayesian model for generating new climate variable realizations and introduces a parameterized time series model. By estimating the model parameters through Bayesian parameter inference with Gibbs sampler, numerous new statistically representative synthetic scenarios can be generated including uncertainty estimates.

Changing climate and land use of 21st century influences soil erosion in India

Subodh Chandra Pal et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the spatial extent and distribution of soil erosion caused by land cover and climate change. By providing a detailed soil erosion map, the study reveals the importance of climate and land cover change in controlling soil erosion, as well as the impact of human activities across the country. The projected soil loss estimation indicates that unless human activities and climate change are controlled, a significant percentage of land surface will erode top soil at a high rate by the year 2100.

District based flood risk assessment in Istanbul using fuzzy analytical hierarchy process

Omer Ekmekcioglu et al.

Summary: Flooding is one of the most frequent and severe hazards in the world, posing a significant threat to the sustainability of built environments and populations in Istanbul. This study proposes a new hierarchical procedure using fuzzy analytical hierarchy process to generate a flood risk map for Istanbul districts, identifying land use and storm event return periods as the most significant criteria for vulnerability and hazard clusters. The findings of the study highlight the usefulness of the fuzzy AHP method for quick and regional flood risk assessment, as well as for allocating resources to mitigate flood risks effectively.
