Record tests to detect non-stationarity in the tails with an application to climate change

Ana C. Cebrian et al.

Summary: The study proposes and compares several statistical tools for analyzing trends and non-stationary behaviors in extreme events such as global warming. These tools can combine information from different types of records and have high detection power.

ESTIMATING HIGH-RESOLUTION RED SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE HOTSPOTS, USING A LOW-RANK SEMIPARAMETRIC SPATIAL MODEL

Arnab Hazra et al.

Summary: In this study, extreme sea surface temperature (SST) hotspots in the Red Sea were estimated using high-resolution satellite-derived SST data. A semiparametric Bayesian spatial mixed-effects linear model was proposed to capture spatial trends and seasonality, with efficient posterior inference drawn using Gibbs sampling. Hotspots were identified, and extreme SST hotspots for the Red Sea, particularly covering endangered coral reefs in the southern region, were projected until 2100 based on Representative Concentration Pathways 4.5 and 8.5.

Long-term spatial modelling for characteristics of extreme heat events

Erin M. Schliep et al.

Summary: Research indicates that global warming leads to more warm days and frequent heat waves. A spatio-temporal model is proposed to study extreme heat events, using local thresholds to predict the characteristics of EHEs at unobserved locations. The model outperforms an autoregressive model based on out-of-sample prediction.

Increasing probability of record-shattering climate extremes

E. M. Fischer et al.

Summary: With the impact of global warming, the intensity and frequency of extreme heat events are constantly increasing, and this change mainly depends on the rate of warming rather than the level.
