Effects of conservation agriculture on physicochemical soil health in 20 maize-based trials in different agro-ecological regions across Mexico

Simon Fonteyne et al.

Summary: Conservation agriculture (CA) is a management technique that combines minimal tillage, permanent soil cover, and crop diversification to reduce soil degradation and improve soil health. In a study conducted in Mexico, CA was found to increase organic matter, nitrates, and soil aggregate stability in comparison to conventional practices, but the effects varied across different sites and soil types. Local adaptive trials are important to assess the effects of CA on soil health and tailor the practice to fit local conditions.

Sustaining the properties of black soil in Central India through crop residue management in a conservation-agriculture-based soybean-wheat system

Devideen Yadav et al.

Summary: Retaining 90% of soybean and wheat residues significantly improved the physical, chemical, and biological properties of black soil in India over a 5-year period, adding nutrients and enhancing soil carbon content. This practice helps protect the soil from degradation.

A cover crop and no-tillage system for enhancing soil health by increasing soil organic matter in soybean cultivation

Heppy Suci Wulanningtyas et al.

Summary: This study found that no-tillage systems and cover crop management can improve soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium-magnesium, bulk density, soil penetration resistance, and substrate-induced respiration which serve as indicators of soil health. The combination of no-till and rye cover crops appears to be a promising technique for enhancing SOC and soil health in Andisols. The melanic index values suggest that the soil is fulvic Andisols with low degree of humification, indicating that the no-till with rye system can enhance SOC and soil health.
