Ultrathin clay-containing layer-by-layer separator coating enhances performance of lithium-sulfur batteries

Almagul Mentbayeva et al.

Summary: The dissolution and diffusion of polysulfides through the separator membrane, known as the shuttle effect, is a major issue in lithium sulfur batteries. This study developed ultrathin polyelectrolyte-clay nanocoatings on the separator membrane to suppress the shuttle effect, improving the performance and safety of the batteries by controlling mass and charge balance of the components.

Boosting Catalytic Activity by Seeding Nanocatalysts onto Interlayers to Inhibit Polysulfide Shuttling in Li-S Batteries

Jingyi Xia et al.

Summary: The use of in situ synthesized ultrasmall vanadium nitride nanoparticles dispersed on porous nitrogen-doped graphene as a catalytic interlayer effectively addresses the shuttle effect caused by soluble lithium polysulfides in Li-S batteries. The ultrasmall size of the vanadium nitride particles provides ample triple-phase interfaces for accelerating LiPS conversion and Li2S deposition, resulting in reduced accumulation of LiPS in the electrolyte and inhibition of the shuttle effect. This approach demonstrates high catalytic activity, as evidenced by a significantly reduced activation energy for Li2S4 conversion and a detected decrease in the shuttle effect, thus leading to outstanding cycling performance and high capacity retention in Li-S batteries.

Enhanced polysulfide conversion catalysis in lithium-sulfur batteries with surface cleaning electrolyte additives

Hualin Ye et al.

Summary: The research focuses on minimizing solid deposition by tuning the electrolyte additives to achieve sustained catalytic effects on polysulfide conversion reactions. The use of toluene and phosphorus pentasulfide-modified electrolyte helps to sweep solid deposits from the catalyst surface, enabling surface rejuvenation throughout the battery charge-discharge process. This approach is applied to improve a newly developed high performance bimetallic Fe-N and Co-N co-doped carbon polysulfide catalyst, leading to high initial sulfur utilization and long cycle stability in sulfur cathodes.

Ultralight Electrolyte for High-Energy Lithium-Sulfur Pouch Cells

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: The introduction of an ultralight electrolyte with a weakly-coordinating and Li-compatible monoether greatly reduces the weight fraction of electrolyte in Li-S batteries, enabling pouch cell functionality under lean-electrolyte conditions and achieving significant improvements in specific energy. Our ultralight electrolyte could achieve an ultralow electrolyte weight/capacity ratio and realize a substantial increase in specific energy, even exceeding 20% improvement at various E/S ratios.
