Single-photon imaging over 200 km

Zheng-Ping Li et al.

Summary: Long-range active imaging using single-photon lidar systems faces limitations in practical applications due to weak echo signals and high background noise. However, a compact coaxial single-photon lidar system has been developed, capable of achieving 3D imaging up to 201.5 km using high-efficiency optical devices and a new noise-suppression technique. Photon-efficient computational algorithms enable accurate 3D imaging over hundreds of kilometers with minimal signal photons per pixel, representing a significant advancement in practical, low-power lidar technology for extra-long ranges.

Josephson junction infrared single-photon detector

Evan D. Walsh et al.

Summary: Josephson junctions serve as high-sensitivity magnetometers and voltage amplifiers, and are crucial for high-performance cryogenic and superconducting quantum computers. Despite the potential degradation in device performance caused by quasiparticle generation, this phenomenon also offers opportunities for detecting electromagnetic radiation with sensitivity.Detection of single photons in near-infrared range has been demonstrated by coupling photons to the localized surface plasmons of a graphene-based Josephson junction, revealing the critical role of quasiparticles in the detection mechanism.

Superconducting microstrip single-photon detector with system detection efficiency over 90% at 1550 nm

Guang-Zhao Xu et al.

Summary: Superconducting microstrip single-photon detectors (SMSPD) have smaller kinetic inductance, higher working current, and lower fabrication requirements compared to traditional SNSPDs, making them potentially useful in the development of ultralarge active area detectors. However, research on SMSPD is still in its early stages, and achieving high performance and practical use remains an open question.
