Advanced Oxidation Technology (Ozone-catalyzed by Powder Activated Carbon-Portland Cement) for the Degradation of the Meropenem Antibiotic

Edison Alexander Agudelo et al.

Summary: The study evaluated an advanced oxidation system based on ozone, activated carbon and Portland cement for the removal of the beta-lactam antibiotic Meropenem. The system showed total elimination of the antibiotic, reduction in COD and acute toxicity, as well as improved efficiency in the production of hydroxyl radicals compared to other ozone-based technologies. A new oxidation index was proposed to establish a functional relationship between process variables and removal efficiency.

Ecotoxicological effects, environmental fate and risks of pharmaceutical and personal care products in the water environment: A review

Huan Wang et al.

Summary: The widespread use of PPCPs has negative impacts on aquatic organisms and the environment, as well as potential hazards to human health. It is essential to study the acute and long-term toxicity of PPCPs, evaluate their environmental behaviors, and make a reasonable assessment of the ecotoxicology and human health risks associated with PPCPs.

Towards a more realistic heterogeneous electro-Fenton

Veronica Poza-Nogueiras et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the scaled-up heterogeneous electro-Fenton treatment was more efficient and cost-effective, with significantly increased treatment volume and hydrogen peroxide production, as well as reduced cost for clofibric acid removal. Additionally, reactor design was highlighted as crucial in the scaling-up process, and the presence of aromatic intermediates and carboxylic acids was confirmed through analysis.
