Significantly improved gas separation properties of sulfonated PIM-1 by direct sulfonation using SO3 solution

Hao Dong et al.

Summary: A novel method for modifying polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) membranes to obtain a series of sulfonated PIM-1 (SPIM-1) membranes was reported. The sulfonated SPIM-1 membranes showed improved gas separation properties and higher selectivity, demonstrating great potential for advanced membrane-based gas separation applications.

Synthesis and characterization of 6FDA/3,5-diamino-2,4,6-trimethylben-zenesulfonic acid-derived polyimide for gas separation applications

Mahmoud A. Abdulhamid et al.

Summary: A sulfonic acid-functionalized trimethyl-substituted polyimide showed lower gas permeability and higher gas pair selectivity due to higher diffusion selectivity and strong hydrogen bonding induced by -SO3H functionalization. Competitive sorption effects and CO2-induced polymer matrix plasticization in gas mixture systems reduced the polymer selectivity.

One-step synthesis of hydroxyl-functionalized fully carbon main chain PIMs via a Friedel-Crafts reaction for efficient gas separation

Zhiyang Zhu et al.

Summary: High performance, robust polymeric membranes synthesized through a one-step super-acid catalyzed condensation reaction showed promising potential in large scale industrial gas separation applications. The membranes demonstrated high molecular weight, good thermal stability, modest microporosity, and moderate to high permeabilities and selectivities. The hydroxyl-functionalized intrinsic microporous polymers showed excellent plasticization resistance and can potentially outperform trade-off curves in gas separation applications.

Highly conductive hydroxide exchange membranes containing fluorene-units tethered with dual pairs of quaternary piperidinium cations

Andrit Allushi et al.

Summary: This study focused on developing anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with high alkaline stability and hydroxide conductivity by functionalizing fluorene units with dual pairs of quaternary piperidinium cations. The AEMs with bisPip side chains demonstrated superior conductivity and alkaline stability compared to AEMs with monoPip cations per fluorene unit, highlighting the advantage of locally concentrating the cations in the polymer structure.

Unprecedented gas separation performance of a difluoro-functionalized triptycene-based ladder PIM membrane at low temperature

Xiaohua Ma et al.

Summary: Advanced ladder polymer membrane material DFTTB exhibits high microporosity, good thermal and mechanical properties, and excellent gas separation performance, surpassing the 2015 permeability/selectivity trade-off curves for H-2/N-2, H-2/CH4 and O-2/N-2. With unprecedented performance at sub-ambient temperatures, DFTTB provides new opportunities for low temperature air separation and hydrogen recovery from petrochemical process streams.
