Effects of ozonation on disinfection by-product formation potentials and biostability in a pilot-scale drinking water treatment plant with micro-polluted water

Huan Gao et al.

Summary: The study found that ozonation can effectively remove disinfection by-product formation potentials, with total removal rates reaching 77.3% and 57.0% for trihalomethane formation potentials (THMFPs) and haloacetic acid formation potentials (HAAFPs) respectively at an ozone dosage of 2 mg/L. Integrated advanced treatment processes can significantly suppress bromine in total THMFPs (TTHMFPs) and increase bromine in total HAAFPs (THAAFPs), resulting in higher brominated HAAFP proportions in treated water compared to raw water.

Flocculation performance and mechanism of fungal pellets on harvesting of microalgal biomass

Xuan-Yuan Pei et al.

Summary: A bioflocculation method assisted by fungal pellets was developed for efficient microalgae harvesting. The maximum flocculation efficiency of 99.4% was achieved under specific conditions. Various analytical techniques were used to explore the mechanism of bioflocculation, revealing the interaction between fungi and microalgae is related to the surface functional groups of fungal pellets.

Flocculation of emulsified oily wastewater by using functional grafting modified chitosan: The effect of cationic and hydrophobic structure

Jiangya Ma et al.

Summary: The modified chitosan flocculants (MCS) synthesized in this study exhibited excellent oil removal efficiency in emulsified oily wastewater treatment over a wide pH range. The cationic and hydrophobic structure of MCS, as well as the use of specific monomers, were found to play key roles in enhancing the oil removal performance. The synthesized MCS showed promising potential for efficient treatment of emulsified oily wastewater.

A fungal immobilization technique for efficient harvesting of oleaginous microalgae: Key parameter optimization, mechanism exploration and spent medium recycling

Ruoyu Chu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the harvesting process of Chlorella vulgaris using pre cultured Aspergillus oryzae pellets, demonstrating the high efficiency and sustainability of the pellet-assisted mode for algal harvesting. The results showed that changes in functional groups and secreted metabolites played a major role in inducing bioflocculation, while the re-growth of microalgae in separated water and the increase in lipid content in recycled medium highlighted the importance of resource recycling.

Impact of high precipitation and temperature events on the distribution of emerging contaminants in surface water in the Mid-Atlantic, United States

Linyan Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that extreme weather events can increase the concentration and detection frequency of emerging contaminants in surface water, likely due to surface runoffs, remobilization from soil/sediment, and sewage overflows. The impact of precipitation and temperature varies across different chemicals, but most pollutants showed increased detection frequency and concentration at higher temperatures.
