Impact of hydraulic retention time on swine wastewater treatment by aerobic granular sludge sequencing batch reactor

Xiaochun Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the performance of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) treating swine wastewater in sequencing batch reactors (SBR). Results showed that decreasing HRT from 16 to 8 h improved sedimentation performance and biomass concentration, but further reduction to 4.8 h led to worse AGS performance. AGS process with 8 h HRT exhibited high pollutant removal efficiency and stable microbial community structure.

Effect of feeding strategy and organic loading rate on the formation and stability of aerobic granular sludge

Oliver Terna Iorhemen et al.

Summary: The experiment results showed that using the slow anaerobic feeding strategy can form a stable aerobic granular sludge, while high OLR can form granules quickly but may lead to instabilities. Research recommends forming granules quickly with high OLR and then reducing the OLR to maintain stability.

Effect of calcium addition to aerobic granular sludge systems under high (conventional SBR) and low (simultaneous fill/draw SBR) selection pressure

Antonio Ricardo Mendes Barros et al.

Summary: The addition of calcium had a significant effect on granulation, particularly in conventional SBRs where larger granules formed in a shorter period of time due to higher EPS production. While the removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus was not affected, the addition of calcium influenced granulation time, settleability characteristics, size, and granule composition.

Hydrocyclone used for in-situ sand removal of natural gas-hydrate in the subsea

Yu-long Chang et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the performance of a hydrocyclone suitable for subsea gas hydrate extraction by studying the effects of operating and geometric parameters through experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. Results show that the optimal flow rate is 7 m(3)/h, and separation efficiency decreases while pressure drop increases as the solid content of the inlet increases.

Aerobic granular sludge systems for treating hypersaline pharmaceutical wastewater: Start-up, long-term performances and metabolic function

Yu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the challenges of treating pharmaceutical wastewater with complex organics, residue pharmaceuticals and high salinity using granular sludge process. While granules could not form in hypersaline pharmaceutical wastewater, successful granule development was achieved with synthetic wastewater and diluted pharmaceutical wastewater. Efficient removal of organics and nitrogen was demonstrated in the diluted wastewater, but a long acclimation period was needed when shifting to complex organic pollutants in pharmaceutical wastewater.

Long-term effect of graphene oxide on the aerobic granular sludge wastewater treatment process

Alfonz Kedves et al.

Summary: The presence of graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO NP) affects the performance and microbial activity of granulated SBR, leading to reduced removal rates of COD, ammonia, and phosphorus. Additionally, the presence of GO NP also impacts the secretion of EPS.
