Accessibility of fiber surface sites for polymeric additives determines dry and wet tensile strength of paper sheets

J. -L. Schafer et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the spatial distribution of wet-strengthening polymers inside the cellulosic fiber network under different treatment conditions, showing that the deposition of the polymer varies significantly depending on the solvent used. The difference in accessibility of distinct surface sites controls the macroscopic tensile strength of paper under both dry and wet conditions.
