Cerebellar injury in term neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is underestimated

Kim V. Annink et al.

Summary: ADC values in the vermis and dentate nucleus of infants with HIE are lower compared to controls, but not in the cerebellar hemispheres. Abnormal ADC values are only found when cytotoxic edema is very severe. ADC values in the vermis are correlated with Purkinje cell injury in the vermis; furthermore, there were no correlations between ADC values and histopathological measures.

Brainstem hypoxic-ischemic lesions on MRI in infants treated with therapeutic cooling: effects on the length of stay and mortality

Siddhartha Sean Sarkar et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of recognizing brainstem injury for predicting short-term outcomes in cooled asphyxiated infants. Infants with brainstem involvement had longer hospital stays and higher mortality rates, indicating the independent association of brainstem injury with adverse outcomes.

Mammillary body atrophy and other MRI correlates of school-age outcome following neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

Kim V. Annink et al.

Summary: In children with HIE, neurocognitive and memory problems are common at school-age, regardless of therapeutic hypothermia. Hippocampal volumes and MB atrophy are linked to various aspects of cognitive function, and normal MB and larger hippocampi are associated with higher global fractional anisotropy. Injury to the MB and hippocampi may serve as early biomarkers for neurocognitive and memory issues in children with HIE.

Early Versus Late Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging after Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy Treated with Therapeutic Hypothermia

Alexandra O'Kane et al.

Summary: The study found substantial agreement between early and late MRI findings in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy undergoing therapeutic hypothermia, with early MRI being more predictive of severe injury and adverse outcomes compared to late MRI. This suggests that a single MRI performed in the first week after birth is sufficient for assessing brain injury and providing prognostic information in this population.

Myelination may be impaired in neonates following birth asphyxia

Bianca Olivieri et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the myelination pattern in neonates with neonatal encephalopathy (NE) who developed brain injury compared to those without injury over the first month of life. The results showed that in NE neonates treated with hypothermia who developed brain injury, birth asphyxia impaired myelination in various brain regions, indicating a potential link between birth asphyxia and myelination deficits.

Early Magnetic Resonance Imaging Predicts 30-Month Outcomes after Therapeutic Hypothermia for Neonatal Encephalopathy

Ashley M. Bach et al.

Summary: Therapeutic hypothermia is associated with lower rates of brain injury and adverse 30-month outcomes after neonatal encephalopathy. The predictive accuracy of MRI in the first week of life is unchanged by therapeutic hypothermia. Normal MRI remains reassuring for normal 30-month outcome after therapeutic hypothermia.

Harmonized Segmentation of Neonatal Brain MRI

Irina Grigorescu et al.

Summary: This work aims to predict tissue segmentation maps on T-2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data of an unseen preterm-born neonatal population using unsupervised domain adaptation techniques. The study compares the methods with a baseline fully-supervised segmentation network and reports results in terms of Dice scores obtained on the source test dataset, demonstrating the applicability of the techniques through the analysis of harmonized data and cortical thickness measures.
