Genomic insights into the fast growth of paulownias and the formation of Paulownia witches' broom

Yabing Cao et al.

Summary: Paulownias are one of the fastest growing trees in the world, but often suffer significant loss of wood production due to infection by Paulownia witches' broom phytoplasmas. This study sequenced and assembled the nuclear genome of Paulownia fortunei, revealing insights into its rapid growth habit and regulatory mechanisms for PaWB formation. Comparative transcriptome analyses identified modules related to cambial growth and development, photosynthesis, and defense responses.

Jujube witches' broom phytoplasma effectors SJP1 and SJP2 induce lateral bud outgrowth by repressing the ZjBRC1-controlled auxin efflux channel

Junyong Zhou et al.

Summary: The study showed that two phytoplasma effectors, SJP1 and SJP2, induce witches' broom and increase lateral branches in jujube trees by repressing the auxin efflux channel. This finding suggests a potential strategy for controlling phytoplasma-associated diseases and a resource for creating new cultivars with varying degrees of shoot branching through gene editing breeding.
