Effect of plastic film mulching on the distribution of plastic residues in agricultural fields

Vinoth M. Kumar et al.

Summary: In this study, plastic residues were found in four regions of Tamil Nadu, India, with the highest distribution in Sulur. The mulching practice did not affect the dehydrogenase enzyme activity of the rhizosphere soil. Plastic debris was mainly in the form of films in the study area.

Understanding plastic degradation and microplastic formation in the environment: A review

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: Plastic waste pollution is a global issue that poses a potential threat to ecosystems and human health, but knowledge on plastic environmental degradation and microplastic formation is still limited. Future research should further study the key factors influencing plastic degradation to predict the fate of plastics in different environments.

Microplastic residues in wetland ecosystems: Do they truly threaten the plant-microbe-soil system?

Hongwei Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics have negative impacts on wetland plant growth performance, soil microbial community structure, and soil chemical properties. The addition of microplastics alters seed germination strategies, reduces plant growth, and affects chlorophyll synthesis. Additionally, microplastics increase the concentration of reactive oxygen species in soil, leading to decreased soil enzyme activity.

Effects of plastic mulch film residues on soil-microbe-plant systems under different soil pH conditions

Yin Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term mulching can reduce rice growth, with 20 years of mulching showing more negative effects on rice tiller number and biomass than 60 years. PMFR altered the composition, diversity, and metabolic function of rhizosphere bacterial communities. As residues increased, the content of SOC decreased, with significant correlations observed between bacterial communities and SOC in the soil-microbe-plant system.

Effect of microplastics and arsenic on nutrients and microorganisms in rice rhizosphere soil

Youming Dong et al.

Summary: The co-pollution of arsenic and microplastics reduces the bioavailability of arsenic in soil, affects enzyme activities and nutrient contents, and inhibits crop growth. Arsenic increases soil organic matter content, while microplastics decrease organic matter content.

Comprehensive assessments of soil fertility and environmental quality in plastic greenhouse production systems

Ya'nan Fan et al.

Summary: The study found that the comprehensive soil quality index in Jingyang was significantly higher than that in Dali, mainly due to soil fertility levels. Primary limiting factors in PGP in these areas were low organic matter content and high electrical conductivity, leading to potential nutrient deficiencies and soil salinity accumulation issues. Significant differences in soil environmental index between the two areas may be responsible for regional differences in soil quality in plastic greenhouse production systems.

Effects of increased plastic film residues on soil properties and crop productivity in agro-ecosystem

Kiprotich Koskei et al.

Summary: The intensive use of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic films in agro-ecosystems has raised concerns due to the increasing film residues in soils. A study on maize fields found that the increased film residues affected soil properties and crop productivity, with biodegradable (Bio) film residues showing slightly less negative impact compared to LDPE residues. This resulted in changes in soil nitrogen content, bulk density, porosity, microbial biomass, and maize yield.

Microplastics in African ecosystems: Current knowledge, abundance, associated contaminants, techniques, and research needs

Olubukola S. Alimi et al.

Summary: Despite Africa's leading position in plastic waste management, there is insufficient data on the extent of microplastics and their interaction with other contaminants in its ecosystems. Studies show abundance and distribution of microplastics and organic pollutants in African aquatic systems and organisms, highlighting challenges and recommending solutions for addressing microplastic pollution in Africa.

Microplastic contamination is ubiquitous in riparian soils and strongly related to elevation, precipitation and population density

Yanfei Zhou et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of microplastic contamination in soils along the Yangtze River, with higher levels of microplastics in subsoils compared to topsoils. Polyamide is the most commonly found polymer, and small microplastic particles dominate subsoil samples. Microfragments are the most common type of microplastic particle, and the contamination is positively correlated with population and precipitation but negatively correlated with elevation.

Leaching and extraction of additives from plastic pollution to inform environmental risk: A multidisciplinary review of analytical approaches

James H. Bridson et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution poses a global concern for its harmful impacts on wildlife, particularly the mechanism of additives leaching from plastics. Understanding the chemical identity and exposure to additives is crucial to assessing the risk to wildlife. While there is a breadth of knowledge on additive release from plastics in various industries, there are still limited reports with inconsistent experimental approaches in this area.
