Abolfazl Naji et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the release of microplastics from the wastewater outfall in Bandar Abbas City into the Persian Gulf, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the most commonly recovered polymers in wastewater and sludge. Further research is needed at water treatment plants in the region to better assess microplastic discharge into the Persian Gulf.

Distinct microplastic distributions in soils of different land-use types: A case study of Chinese farmlands

Jiao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution characteristics of microplastics in different types of farmland in China, revealing that plastic mulching is a major contributor to microplastic pollution in agricultural lands. Different land uses showed variations in microplastic characteristics, with cereal crop farmlands more likely to contain fibrous shapes and large microplastic particles, while economically important tree lands were likely to contain fragment shapes and small microplastic particles.

Microplastics occurrence and frequency in soils under different land uses on a regional scale

Fabio Corradini et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of microplastic pollution in soils under different land uses in the central valley of Chile, with agricultural activities being a potential major source. Contrary to common belief, the distance to mining operations, roads, or urban areas did not increase the microplastic particles count.

Elimination of Microplastics by Downstream Sand Filters in Wastewater Treatment

Sebastian Wolff et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal of microplastic particles and fibers in the final treatment stage of wastewater treatment plants and found that municipal WWTPs were able to eliminate 99.2%-99.4% of microplastics, while a PVC manufacturer's sand filtration eliminated 99.2%-99.9% of microplastics.

The occurrence of microplastic in Mu Us Sand Land soils in northwest China: Different soil types, vegetation cover and restoration years

Ling Ding et al.

Summary: The investigation revealed a relatively high abundance of microplastics in Mu Us Sand Land soils, with the woodland area showing a higher concentration of microplastics in the size range of 0 to 0.50 mm. Different tree species exhibited variations in microplastic accumulation, and the abundance of microplastics decreased with increasing restoration years.

Micro- and nanoplastic induced cellular toxicity in mammals: A review

Amrita Banerjee et al.

Summary: Plastic-based products are widely used in daily life but their limited biodegradability has raised pollution concerns globally, particularly micro- and nanoplastics. These pollutants are widespread in various environments and have well-documented biological effects on aquatic organisms, while their impacts on mammals remain insufficiently studied. Small size, positive charge, high dose, and presence of toxic additives or pollutants in micro/nanoplastics appear to induce cellular toxicity through oxidative stress, membrane damage, immune response, and genotoxicity.

Amount, distribution and composition of large microplastics in typical agricultural soils in Northern Germany

Ivy Kaye Harms et al.

Summary: The study found the presence of microplastics (MP) in farmland soils, with synthetic particles found in only 34% of the sampling units despite being detected at all study sites. These data are crucial for future monitoring schemes and the development of environmentally friendly management systems to reduce the input of MP into agricultural systems.

Potential Effects of Microplastic on Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi

Eva F. Leifheit et al.

Summary: Microplastics have diverse effects on soil and plant growth, altering soil structure and microbial activity, which in turn affects the abundance and activity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The impacts of microplastics may also change how plants respond to other global change factors, highlighting the need for further research on their overall impact on ecosystems.

The Influence of Polystyrene Microspheres Abundance on Development and Feeding Behavior of Artemia salina (Linnaeus, 1758)

Marco Albano et al.

Summary: The study evaluated how 10 μm polyethylene microspheres were ingested by Artemia salina larvae within the first 7 days of their life cycle and the impact on their health. Results showed that larvae ingested microplastics in a dose-dependent manner and were significantly influenced by food availability. The worst effect on developmental stages was observed at 168 hours with a food source, with a significant reduction in microalgal feeding at the highest microplastics concentration.

Microplastic fibers in the gut of highly consumed fish species from the southern Caspian Sea

Mohammad Javad Nematollahi et al.

Summary: The study found that leaping mullet had the highest frequency of microplastics (MPs) in their gut in the southern Caspian Sea biome, while Caspian kutum had the lowest. MPs were mainly in fiber shape, and the dominant polymers were black MPs, polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. Different fish species showed significant differences in condition index, suggesting that MPs may have adverse health impacts on leaping mullet and common carp, but not on Caspian kutum.
