Response of rice (Oryza sativa L.) roots to nanoplastic treatment at seedling stage

Chao-Qun Zhou et al.

Summary: The study revealed that polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) were taken up by rice roots, leading to oxidative stress response in the roots and affecting root length and lateral root numbers. Additionally, PS-NPs treatment activated carbon metabolism in rice roots while inhibiting jasmonic acid and lignin biosynthesis.

Microplastics occurrence and frequency in soils under different land uses on a regional scale

Fabio Corradini et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of microplastic pollution in soils under different land uses in the central valley of Chile, with agricultural activities being a potential major source. Contrary to common belief, the distance to mining operations, roads, or urban areas did not increase the microplastic particles count.

Microplastics in the Aquatic Environment: Occurrence, Persistence, Analysis, and Human Exposure

Maria Ricciardi et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MP) have emerged as a significant concern in the water environment, with a growing number of studies focusing on their potential risks to human health. This review article discusses the occurrence, accumulation, assessment methods, fate, and transport of MP, as well as the need for standardized protocols in future research.

The stochastic association of nanoparticles with algae at the cellular level: Effects of NOM, particle size and particle shape

Fazel Abdolahpur Monikh et al.

Summary: This study found that the association of gold nanoparticles with algal cells follows a random probability and less than 45% of the cell population accumulated nanoparticles on their surface after 72 hours of exposure. The distribution of nanoparticles within algal cells was heterogeneous, with some cells having significantly higher numbers of nanoparticles compared to others. The presence of natural organic matter coating on the nanoparticles decreased the percentage of cells containing nanoparticles, except for one specific size of the nanoparticles.

Adsorption, uptake and toxicity of micro- and nanoplastics: Effects on terrestrial plants and aquatic macrophytes

Alicia Mateos-Cardenas et al.

Summary: The research suggests that micro-and nanoplastics may have adsorption, uptake, and toxicological effects on plants and aquatic macrophytes, impacting food webs and food safety. Many plant and macrophyte species exhibit stress responses after exposure to plastic particles, potentially affecting ecosystem productivity and function.

Microplastics in terrestrial ecosystems: Moving beyond the state of the art to minimize the risk of ecological surprise

Didier L. Baho et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution is widespread, but research on its impacts in terrestrial ecosystems is limited. Current studies mainly focus on single species under controlled laboratory conditions, with few considering long-term field conditions or multi-species assemblages. More ecologically meaningful research is needed to understand the effects of microplastics in terrestrial environments and reduce the risk of ecological surprises.

Cyanotoxins in drinking water supply reservoir (Legedadi, Central Ethiopia): implications for public health safety

Hanna Habtemariam et al.

Summary: This study conducted a preliminary analysis of cyanotoxins in Legedadi Reservoir in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Cyanobacteria were found to dominate the phytoplankton community, with six major microcystin variants detected. The high concentrations of extracellular microcystins, especially MC-LR, pose a significant public health risk for end-users.
