Iron-modified biochar and water management regime-induced changes in plant growth, enzyme activities, and phytoavailability of arsenic, cadmium and lead in a paddy soil

Ergang Wen et al.

Summary: The study found that FeBC effectively reduced the bioavailability of As and Pb in paddy soils, while RawBC was more suitable for reducing the bioavailability of Cd. In addition, FeBC treatment not only increased rice yield, but also had a certain impact on soil enzyme activity.

Exogenous plant growth regulator alleviate the adverse effects of U and Cd stress in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and improve the efficacy of U and Cd remediation

Li Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed that exogenous PGRs can alleviate the combined stress of uranium and cadmium on sunflowers by stimulating photosynthesis, reducing levels of active oxygen and lipid peroxidation, and enhancing antioxidant defense systems. Additionally, PGRs can increase the uptake of uranium and cadmium by sunflowers, improving their remediation efficiency for uranium and cadmium contamination in the soil.

In-situ immobilization of cadmium-polluted upland soil: A ten-year field study

Guobing Wang et al.

Summary: In-situ immobilization is an effective strategy for remediating soil polluted with heavy metals. A ten-year experiment showed that lime, silicon fertilizer, and fused calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer can reduce Cd uptake by Artemisia selengensis by increasing soil pH and decreasing acid-extractable Cd content. These stable and ecologically safe amendments provide a long-term solution for mitigating food product contamination risk in heavy-metal-polluted soil.

Alternate wetting and drying irrigation and phosphorus rates affect grain yield and quality and heavy metal accumulation in rice

Tao Song et al.

Summary: Alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation increases rice yield and water use efficiency, but higher P fertilizer application results in increased accumulation of heavy metals in rice grains. Therefore, attention should be paid to the level of P fertilizer application in water-saving AWD irrigation to minimize heavy metal content in grains.

Cadmium accumulation in rice and its bioavailability in paddy soil with application of silicon fertilizer under different water management regimes

Wenxuan Luo et al.

Summary: The application of silicon fertilizer and continuous flooding can increase soil pH, reduce soil available Cd content, and improve the chemical forms of Cd in soil. Silicon fertilizer can increase Cd content in rice roots but decrease Cd content in rice stems and brown rice, effectively preventing Cd accumulation in rice.

Pristine and iron-engineered animal- and plant-derived biochars enhanced bacterial abundance and immobilized arsenic and lead in a contaminated soil

He Pan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that iron-engineered biochars were more effective in immobilizing arsenic, while original animal- and plant-derived biochars were better at immobilizing lead in soil. Biochar amendments increased bacterial abundance in soil, potentially alleviating the bio-toxicity of arsenic and lead to soil bacteria.
