Phenological and intrinsic predictors of mite and haemacoccidian infection dynamics in a Mediterranean community of lizards

Robby M. Drechsler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temporal host-parasite dynamics in a lizard community in Eastern Spain over an entire annual activity period. The results suggest that habitat type is the only predictor explaining the abundance of all parasites, with parasite abundance generally higher in forests than in dunes.

Ectoparasite load increase in reproductively active sand lizards

Radovan Smolinsky et al.

Summary: The study found that adult sand lizards have a higher ectoparasite load than subadults, and male sand lizards are more susceptible to blood-sucking ectoparasites than females. The results suggest that the extensive locomotion during territory defense and mate search in males, as well as increased energy intake during gestation in females, contribute to elevated ectoparasite exposure.
