Implementing Nature-Based Solutions in Rural Landscapes: Barriers Experienced in the PHUSICOS Project

Anders Solheim et al.

Summary: Nature-based solutions are increasingly vital in political agendas for reducing hydrometeorological hazards, but barriers in their practical implementation mainly stem from institutional factors, stakeholder resistance, and technical/economic issues. The PHUSICOS project aims to demonstrate NBS in rural and mountain landscapes, but experienced challenges have led to cancellation of planned interventions.

The natural assurance value of nature-based solutions: A layered institutional analysis of socio ecological systems for long term climate resilient transformation

Elena Lopez Gunn et al.

Summary: Nature based solutions are proposed to transform the current water intensive economic model and consider water as an eco-social asset, which is reflected in the selection of hybrid nature-based strategies compared to sole grey infrastructure strategies. Stakeholder engagement and participatory workshops help to consider a wider range of options to address water scarcity as an opportunity for diversified and resilient economic development under climate change.

Causal Loop Diagram Aggregation Towards Model Completeness

Emily Ryan et al.

Summary: Experienced system dynamicists commonly use Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) to conceptualise causal relationships and feedback loops. Aggregating multiple CLDs is necessary to correctly attribute cause and effect from multiple data sets in order to create a coherent view of a phenomenon of interest. This paper examines three data aggregation approaches in system dynamics studies and highlights the importance of considering equifinality and multifinality in research.
