Autotrophic and mixotrophic metabolism of an anammox bacterium revealed by in vivo13C and2H metabolic network mapping

Christopher E. Lawson et al.

Summary: This study experimentally resolved the central carbon metabolism of the anammox bacterium 'Kuenenia stuttgartiensis', confirming predicted metabolic pathways and revealing instances where genomic predictions did not align with in vivo metabolic fluxes. The findings provide a foundation for understanding the carbon metabolism of anammox bacteria at a systems-level and inform future studies on factors governing their function and niche differentiation in ecosystems.

A review on anammox process for the treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater: Linking effects with corresponding mechanisms

Jinjin Fu et al.

Summary: Antibiotics are widely present in wastewater from livestock husbandry and the pharmaceutical industry, with high biological toxicity and the potential to promote the occurrence and transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes. The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process shows promise in removing nitrogen from antibiotic-containing wastewater, but antibiotic inhibition has been observed. This review provides insights into the effects of antibiotics on anammox and suggests future research directions for improving nitrogen removal in antibiotic-containing wastewater treatment.

Evolution of microbial community and antibiotic resistance genes in anammox process stressed by oxytetracycline and copper

Qian-Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study examined the individual and combined impacts of copper ion (Cu2+) and oxytetracycline (OTC) on anammox performance and its self-recovery process. The results showed that anammox bacteria were inhibited by 1.0 mg L-1 OTC, Cu2+, and OTC + Cu2+, but the inhibition was reversible. The abundance of functional genes and some antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were positively related to the dominant bacterium Ca. Kuenenia, indicating that the recovery of performance was associated with the induction of potentially resistant species.

N-acyl-L-homoserine lactones release and microbial community changes in response to operation temperature in an anammox biofilm reactor

Lingjie Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the decrease in temperature weakened quorum sensing and led to a reduction in nitrogen removal efficiency in the anaerobic ammonium oxidation reactor. Candidatus Kuenenia was identified as the predominant anammox bacteria, with its abundance increasing as the temperature decreased. The complex relationship between microbial genus and AHLs was also observed.

Unraveling the capability of graphene nanosheets and γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles to stimulate anammox granular sludge

Ahmed Elreedy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of nanomaterials, specifically graphene nanosheets and gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, in enhancing anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process. Results showed that graphene nanosheets improved nitrogen removal rate and enzyme activity, while gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles increased nitrogen removal rate but had no effect on enzyme activity. The use of nanomaterials also influenced the composition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and microbial enrichment in the anammox process.

Summary: Research has found that PBS and PVC microplastics reduce the nitrite removal efficiency of anammox sludge, while PBS MPs have a positive effect on the polysaccharide content in the sludge. In addition, non-biodegradable PVC MPs are more harmful to anammox sludge and warrant attention.

Salinity effect on freshwater Anammox bacteria: Ionic stress and ion composition

Limin Lin et al.

Summary: The study found that NaCl, KCl, and Na2SO4 have different inhibitory effects on freshwater Anammox bacteria, with NaCl inhibiting the transport of ammonium and Na2SO4 inhibiting the transport of nitrite and ammonium. High salinity inhibits functional enzyme activity, indicating that both ionic stress and ion composition contribute to the observed inhibition effects.

Mechanism concerning the occurrence and removal of antibiotic resistance genes in composting product with ozone post-treatment

Yiqi Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that ozone treatment significantly reduced ARGs and MGEs in composting product, with the changes in other ARGs post-ozonation related to MGEs abundance. Additionally, the reduction of potential host bacteria after ozonation contributed to the removal of intracellular ARGs.

Insight into the evolution of microbial community and antibiotic resistance genes in anammox process induced by copper after recovery from oxytetracycline stress

Qian-Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: The experimental results show that the stress on Anammox performance caused by Cu2+ is reversible, and the inhibition can be slowed down by the combination of OTM and Cu2+. The positive relation between dominant bacteria and abundance of functional genes implies that the recovery of performance is due to the gradual domestication of latent resistant species.

Summary: This study found that most of the ARG subtypes detected in biogas digestate could be dispersed into the atmosphere through aerosol dispersion, with different relative abundance and diversity of ARGs in biogas digestate compared to aerosols, and no significant correlation between the relative abundance of ARGs in biogas digestate and aerosols. Storage of biogas digestate led to an increase in abundance of certain ARG subtypes.
