Potential microplastic release from the maritime industry: Abrasion of rope

Imogen Ellen Napper et al.

Summary: This study compared ropes of different ages and materials to quantify microplastic production during use. It found that irregularly shaped microplastic fragments released from rope wear may have been falsely attributed to land-based sources. New and one-year-old polypropylene ropes released significantly fewer microplastic fragments compared to older ropes, indicating that rope age is a key factor influencing microplastic release.

Microplastics in three typical benthic species from the Arctic: Occurrence, characteristics, sources, and environmental implications

Chao Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, characteristics, sources, and environmental implications of microplastics in three common benthic species from the Chukchi Sea. The findings suggest that sea anemones could serve as bioindicators of microplastic pollution, with sources likely including melting sea ice, fishery activities, and ocean currents.

The parasitic dinoflagellate Hematodinium infects multiple crustaceans in the polyculture systems of Shandong Province, China

Meng Li et al.

Summary: A study in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China, revealed that the Hematodinium parasite is transmitted and infects multiple crab hosts in polyculture pond systems through wild crabs, particularly Helice tientsinensis. The parasite is more infectious to cultured Portunus trituberculatus and plays a significant role in the transmission and spreading of Hematodinium disease in the polyculture pond systems.

Nationwide monitoring of microplastics in bivalves from the coastal environment of Korea

Youna Cho et al.

Summary: Bivalves serve as useful bioindicators of microplastic contamination in the marine environment, with microplastics widely distributed in both coastal bivalves and waters. Despite the lack of significant relationship in the abundance of microplastics, their dominant features such as size, shape, color and polymer type were similar between bivalves and seawater. The study suggests that microplastic contamination is widespread in the Korean coastal environment, with bivalves reflecting the microplastic pollution characteristics of the surrounding waters.

Preliminary results on the occurrence and anatomical distribution of microplastics in wild populations of Nephrops norvegicus from the Adriatic Sea

Michela Martinelli et al.

Summary: This study identified microplastics (MPs) in different anatomical compartments of Norway lobsters, with fragments being more concentrated in the hepatopancreas and fibers more in the gut. The predominant polymers were polyester, polyamide 6, polyvinyl chloride, and polyethylene. The size of MPs influenced their anatomical distribution, and there were no significant differences between individuals from different sampling sites. Individual sex did not affect the level of retained MPs.

Soil erosion as transport pathway of microplastic from agriculture soils to aquatic ecosystems

Raphael Rehm et al.

Summary: This study focused on the erosion and transport processes of microplastics (MP) from agricultural topsoils during heavy rainfall events. The experiments revealed a preferential transport of MP with increasing interaction with mineral soil particles or aggregates leading to a more conservative transport behavior over time. The findings suggest that arable land prone to soil erosion can be a significant source of MP for aquatic ecosystems.

Assessing microplastic distribution within infaunal benthic communities in a coastal embayment

Elena Pagter et al.

Summary: This study assessed the levels of anthropogenic microplastics in benthic infauna from 20 subtidal stations in Galway Bay, Ireland. The results indicated that fibers were the dominant particle type, colors recorded in the organisms were mainly blue, and the ingestion of microplastics was associated with depth.

Biofilm growth on buoyant microplastics leads to changes in settling rates: Implications for microplastic retention in the Great Lakes

Patricia O. Semcesen et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the sinking rate of microplastics in a lake environment is influenced by biofilm development, leading to increased density and eventual sedimentation. Smaller particles sink more easily than larger particles, resulting in size-based fractionation during sedimentation in lakes.

Eating Near the Dump: Identification of Nearby Plastic Hotspot as a Proxy for Potential Microplastic Contamination in the Norwegian Lobster (Nephrops norvegicus)

Simone Franceschini et al.

Summary: Plastic waste dumped in the marine environment has severe impacts on ecosystems, society, and the economy. Recent studies have shown the contamination of marine organisms by microplastics originating from macroplastic degradation. This research investigated the relationship between potential sources of microplastics and ingestion by benthic crustaceans, highlighting the importance of considering plastic fate in marine environments and its impacts on biota and seafood quality.
