Summary: This study used stable Hg isotope tracing technique to investigate the sources and transformations of Hg species in rice plants, revealing that soil is an important source of IHg in rice grains and MeHg is formed in paddy soil via microbial methylation. While in vivo methylation of IHg in rice plants is unlikely to occur, in vivo demethylation of MeHg was observed in above-ground parts of rice plants.
