Microplastic pollution and ecological risk assessment in an estuarine environment: The Dongshan Bay of China

Zhong Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated microplastic (MP) pollution in the surface water of Dongshan Bay in southern China, finding that the main sources of MPs were PE, PP, and PS foam, leading to a minor ecological risk. The research results provided baseline data and ecological risk assessment methods for MP pollution in Dongshan Bay.

Suspended fine particulate matter (PM2.5), microplastics (MPs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air: Their possible relationships and health implications

Razegheh Akhbarizadeh et al.

Summary: The study found that in the urban area of Bushehr port, PM2.5 and MPs may act as carriers for airborne MPs and PAHs, respectively, and the transport of MPs is highly controlled by atmospheric conditions. Petrogenic sources from both proximal and distal origins play an important role in the level of PAHs. Chronic health risk evaluation via inhalation revealed a high potential cancer risk for PM2.5-bound PAHs in winter.

Occurrence and distribution of microplastic particles and the concentration of Di 2-ethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP) in microplastics and wastewater in the wastewater treatment plant

Afshin Takdastan et al.

Summary: The wastewater treatment plant is a significant source of microplastics release, with DEHP being commonly used. This study found a decrease in the number and size of microplastics and DEHP concentrations in the treated effluent, but highlighted the ongoing threat to aquatic health due to the large volume of effluent entering the environment daily.

Assessment of potential ecological risk of microplastics in the coastal sediments of India: A meta-analysis

M. Ranjani et al.

Summary: The abundance, chemical composition, and ecological risk of microplastics in terrestrial and marine environments have attracted substantial attention. This study evaluated the ecological risk of microplastics in sediments along the Indian coast using meta-data. Results showed that the west coast is moderately contaminated, while the east coast is less contaminated, with areas of higher ecological risk found in metropolitan cities, river mouths, potential fishing zones, and remote islands.

Fatemeh Abootalebi Jahromi et al.

Summary: The current study investigated the concentration, biological risks, chemical speciation, mobility of heavy metals, as well as the distribution and abundance of microplastics in coastal sediments and bivalves in the Persian Gulf, the coastal area of Hormozgan Province. The results showed that heavy metal concentrations were lower than average shale and the upper continental crust, with significant enrichment in certain areas.

Emerging endocrine disruptors in two edible fish from the Persian Gulf: Occurrence, congener profile, and human health risk assessment

Razegheh Akhbarizadeh et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of various endocrine disrupting chemicals in two widely consumed fish species from the Persian Gulf, with DEHP being the most frequently detected compound. The concentrations of EDCs were generally higher in the liver than in the muscle, and consuming two fish-based meals per week may pose a moderate risk, especially for vulnerable population groups.

Abandoned Covid-19 personal protective equipment along the Bushehr shores, the Persian Gulf: An emerging source of secondary microplastics in coastlines

Razegheh Akhbarizadeh et al.

Summary: During the Covid-19 pandemic, a study conducted in the Bushehr port coastline of the Persian Gulf found a high presence of PPE waste, with an estimated disposal rate of 350 items per day and 127,750 items per year. The damaged surgical masks and torn plastic gloves collected from the coastal areas were identified as potential sources of microplastics pollution in marine environments.

Ida Jarlskog et al.

Summary: This study conducted in Gothenburg, Sweden, investigates the occurrence of metals, organic pollutants, and microplastics in roads and stormwater, confirming traffic as an important source of these pollutants. Results show that street sweepers collect large amounts of polluted materials, preventing further spread of pollutants into receiving stormwater.
