Microplastics in the Black Sea sediments

Alessandra Cincinelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, morphology, and identification of microplastics in Black Sea sediments at different depths using a non-invasive method. The research found that microplastics were present in 83% of sediment samples, with polyethylene and polypropylene being the most abundant plastic polymers, and fibers being the dominant type of microplastics in sediments.

Atmospheric deposition of microplastics in the coastal zone: Characteristics and relationship with meteorological factors

Karolina Szewc et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the quantitative and qualitative compositions of microplastics deposited from the atmosphere in the coastal zone, and investigated the links with meteorological factors. The deposited microplastics were predominantly fibers, with smaller size classes dominating and mainly originating from textiles, packaging materials, and fishing gear. Air mass trajectory analysis showed that microplastics deposited in Gdynia mainly came from local sources.

Microplastics in the Lut and Kavir Deserts, Iran

Sajjad Abbasi et al.

Summary: This study isolated microplastics from soils collected from the Kavir and Lut Deserts on the Iranian plateau, with most of them having a fibrous nature and being composed of polyethylene terephthalate and Nylon. The majority of microplastics are likely brought into these desert environments from distant sources via wind, undergoing rapid transport, internal recycling, as well as significant photo-oxidation and mechanical weathering.

Constraining the atmospheric limb of the plastic cycle

Janice Brahney et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a significant issue in the 21st century, with recent research focusing on the transport of microplastics by the atmosphere. Studies suggest that atmospheric microplastics in the western United States primarily come from secondary reemission sources, highlighting the importance of understanding the sources and pathways of atmospheric plastic pollution.

Quantification of selected microplastics in Australian urban road dust

Stacey O'Brien et al.

Summary: Microplastics, mainly composed of PVC and PET, were found to be prevalent in road dust in urban and rural areas of South-East Queensland, Australia. The study revealed a significant relationship between microplastic concentrations in road dust and the volume of vehicles, indicating human activity as a factor influencing microplastic pollution in the environment.
