Enhancing waste activated sludge dewaterability by reducing interaction energy of sludge flocs

Wenbo Yu et al.

Summary: The study showed that the addition of trivalent cations and Fenton's reagent can improve sludge dewaterability by reducing the energy barrier and repulsive force between sludge flocs, converting hydrophilic surfaces to hydrophobic, and decreasing the Lewis acid-base interaction energy of sludge flocs.

Maintaining microbial diversity mitigates membrane fouling of an anoxic/oxic membrane bioreactor under starvation condition

Yuya Takimoto et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and microbial community dynamics to membrane fouling development in membrane bioreactor (MBR). The results showed that high microbial diversity and specific bacterial families played important roles in mitigating membrane fouling, while low microbial diversity contributed to fouling development.

Evaluating the effect of air flow rate on hybrid and conventional membrane bioreactors: Implications on performance, microbial activity and membrane fouling

Tiago J. Belli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of air flow rate on the performance and microbial community of two types of sequencing batch membrane bioreactors. It was found that COD removal efficiencies were above 95% in both reactors, regardless of the aeration intensity. The hybrid MBR showed faster re-establishment of high nitrification levels and slight improvement in phosphorus removal under reduced DO conditions.

Fouling behaviors are different at various negative potentials in electrochemical anaerobic membrane bioreactors with conductive ceramic membranes

Xian-Bin Ying et al.

Summary: The study focused on using conductive ceramic membranes to control membrane fouling in AnMBR, showing that the conductive membranes can enhance anti-fouling performance. By increasing the particle sizes of foulants in the supernatant and the electric field forces, the conductive membrane at -1.0 V could increase the porosity of the gel layer on the surface, while at -2.0 V it could inhibit the activity of adhering bacteria.

Rapid enrichment of anammox bacteria linked to floc aggregates in a single-stage partial nitritation-anammox process: Providing the initial carrier and anaerobic microenvironment

Jialin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of floc aggregates in the enrichment of anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria (AnAOB) in a partial nitritation-anammox bioreactor. The addition of excess sodium acetate induced the formation of small floc aggregates, providing an initial biological carrier and necessary anaerobic microenvironment for the growth of attached AnAOB. These results suggest that floc aggregates play a crucial role in the enrichment of AnAOB and can be influenced by operational conditions.

Effects of powdered activated carbon and calcium on trihalomethane toxicity of zebrafish embryos and larvae in hybrid membrane bioreactors

Jin Hyung Noh et al.

Summary: This study found that the addition of powdered activated carbon or calcium significantly reduced the formation potential of trihalomethane in hybrid membrane bioreactors, but high levels of trihalomethane exposure had toxic effects on zebrafish embryos and larvae, leading to behavioral and visual organ damage. Further research is needed to understand the mechanism behind trihalomethane toxicity.

One-year operation of a 20-L submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor for real domestic wastewater treatment at room temperature: Pursuing the optimal HRT and sustainable flux

Jiayuan Ji et al.

Summary: A 20 L hollow-fiber submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (SAnMBR) was used to treat real domestic wastewater with varying HRTs. The study found that organic removal efficiency was good at HRTs between 6 and 12 h, but also acceptable at 4 h, albeit with lower biogas production and higher sludge yield. Controlling GSV and MLSS can decrease fouling rate and achieve sustainable operation.

88 Assimilatory and dissimilatory sulfate reduction in the bacterial diversity of biofoulant from a full-scale biofilm-membrane bioreactor for textile wastewater treatment

Lijie Zhou et al.

Summary: Assimilatory and dissimilatory sulfate reduction (ASR and DSR) pathways play important roles in bacterial sulfate reduction during wastewater treatment. Metagenomic analysis revealed diverse microbial communities in biofoulants, with abundant functional genes related to ASR and DSR. ASR functional genes were more abundant in the biofoulants, but bacteria with complete DSR pathways were responsible for sulfide production in the biofilm-MBR.
