Transformation and fate of thallium and accompanying metal(loid)s in paddy soils and rice: A case study from a large-scale industrial area in China

Yanjun Jiang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the enrichment and migration mechanisms of thallium (Tl) and metal(loid)s in paddy soils surrounding an industrial park utilizing Tl-bearing minerals, showing Tl contamination and potential health risks. Results indicated that Tl(I) in the soils was controlled by adsorption, oxidation, and precipitation of Fe/Mn(hydr)oxides, potentially inhibiting Tl uptake by rice grains. The high health quotient (HQ) values suggested a potentially high Tl risk for inhabitants consuming the rice grains, highlighting the importance of controlling Tl discharge from industrial activities for food safety in rice paddy soils.

Emerging risks of toxic metal(loid)s in soil-vegetables influenced by steel-making activities and isotopic source apportionment

Jin Wang et al.

Summary: Industrial activities can lead to contamination by toxic elements in nearby agricultural lands, posing health risks especially for children. Remediation measures are needed to reduce contamination and ensure food safety. Further research is required on the sources, pollution levels, and health risks associated with elements like Tl, As, and Pb in vegetables.

Highly efficient removal of thallium in wastewater by MnFe2O4-biochar composite

Juan Liu et al.

Summary: Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic trace metal, and the emerging pollution of Tl in waters has become a global concern. The MnFe2O4-biochar composite (MFBC) is a promising and cost-effective adsorbent with high efficiency in removing Tl from wastewater, showing potential for practical application.

Pedogeochemical distribution of gallium, indium and thallium, their potential availability and associated risk in highly-weathered soil profiles of Taiwan

Yu-Hsi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of Ga, In, and Tl in highly-weathered soils in Taiwan and assessed the contamination degree using various indices. The total content of these elements varied significantly among soil profiles, with contamination degree mainly determined by enrichment factor and geo-accumulation index. Predictions of available Ga and Tl were successful through regression analysis, while more assessment methods are needed for the availability of In in the future.

Emergent thallium exposure from uranium mill tailings

Meiling Yin et al.

Summary: This study provides novel insights into the characteristics and mechanisms of thallium release from uranium mill tailings (UMT), highlighting the importance of particle size effects and surface dissolution in controlling thallium release. Long-term leaching and weathering can lead to an increase in acid extractable and oxidizable fractions of thallium in UMT.

Uranium re-adsorption on uranium mill tailings and environmental implications

Meiling Yin et al.

Summary: The study comprehensively investigated the role of uranium re-adsorption behaviors during leaching tests with uranium mill tailings, revealing the influence of environmentally relevant factors on U re-absorption capacity and mechanism on UMTs with different particle sizes. The findings suggest that the environmental hazards and ecological risks of the U containing (waste) solids might have been underestimated due to the ignorance of the readsorption process, since the re-adsorbed U could be easily re-mobilized. Insights from this study are also helpful in developing effective in-situ remediation strategies.

Tracing Riverine Particulate Black Carbon Sources in Xijiang River Basin: Insight from Stable Isotopic Composition and Bayesian Mixing Model

Jinke Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that the PBC/POC ratio in Xijiang River was slightly higher, possibly due to the mobility difference between POC and PBC, aerosol BC input and riverine biogenic effect. The isotopic compositions of PBC depleted 13 C compared with POC and DOC, indicating possible sources from biomass burning or fossil fuel combustion BC particles input and fractionation during soil organic matter production. The MixSIAR model showed that most PBC in the study area was derived from fossil fuel combustion.

Geochemical and U-Th isotopic insights on uranium enrichment in reservoir sediments

Jin Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that U contamination and mobilization-release risk are high in reservoir sediments in the U mine area, influenced by discharge of U-containing wastewater. Using U/Th activity ratios and U isotopic compositions, the sources and geochemical behaviors of U in sediments can be inferred to be greatly affected by wastewater discharge and natural processes. The results demonstrate that U-Th isotopes are a powerful tool for better understanding U geochemical processes affected by multiple sources.
