Sustainable management and recycling of food waste anaerobic digestate: A review

Shanta Dutta et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is widely used to produce biogas from food waste, but a significant amount of nutrient-rich food waste anaerobic digestate (FWD) remains under-utilised. FWD has potential as a nutrient source for microalgal cultivation and biofuel production, and emerging technologies like thermal conversion show promise in converting FWD into value-added products like biochar/hydrochar. Integrated AD with valorisation facilities is encouraged to achieve complete resource utilisation and reduce carbon emissions.

Anaerobic digestion: An alternative resource treatment option for food waste in China

Chenxi Jin et al.

Summary: With the implementation of zero-waste city and waste classification in China, there is an urgent need for advanced food waste treatment technology. Anaerobic digestion (AD) technology has attracted much attention in China due to its advantages including clean energy production, low carbon emissions, and suitability for large-scale treatment. Chinese policies are conducive to the development and promotion of AD technology for food waste treatment.

Life-cycle assessment of two food waste disposal processes based on anaerobic digestion in China

Xionghui Fei et al.

Summary: In this study, the technological parameters of liquid-phase anaerobic digestion and solid-liquid mixed anaerobic digestion for food waste disposal were evaluated in terms of energy consumption and environmental impact. Liquid-phase anaerobic digestion demonstrated higher potential for global warming, eutrophication, acidification, and photochemical ozone creation compared to solid-liquid mixed anaerobic digestion. Increasing total-solids degradation efficiency and total-solids content of biogas residue in solid-liquid mixed anaerobic digestion can significantly reduce eutrophication potential, acidification potential, and photochemical ozone creation potential. The total-solids content of the separated solid phase is an important factor affecting the environmental impact of liquid-phase anaerobic digestion.

Life cycle assessment of power batteries used in electric bicycles in China

Wenqiu Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the life cycle environmental performance of electric bicycle batteries in China, finding that battery manufacturing and usage stages have the greatest impact on overall environmental performance. Battery recycling can increase environmental benefits, with lead-tin-calcium batteries having the lowest toxic potential and lithium-iron-phosphate batteries showing better environmental performance. The end-of-life environmental contributions of lithium-ion batteries are not as good as lead-acid batteries, indicating room for improvement in reducing battery environmental impact.
