Detection and Analysis of Microplastics in Human Sputum

Shumin Huang et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution is a emerging environmental problem that has little research on its impact on human health. This study investigated the presence of microplastics in human sputum and found that they are ubiquitous in the respiratory tract, indicating inhalation as a potential pathway for plastics to enter the human body. The types and quantities of microplastics were found to be related to factors such as smoking and invasive examination.

Potential microplastic release from the maritime industry: Abrasion of rope

Imogen Ellen Napper et al.

Summary: This study compared ropes of different ages and materials to quantify microplastic production during use. It found that irregularly shaped microplastic fragments released from rope wear may have been falsely attributed to land-based sources. New and one-year-old polypropylene ropes released significantly fewer microplastic fragments compared to older ropes, indicating that rope age is a key factor influencing microplastic release.

Microplastics in the Florence wastewater treatment plant studied by a continuous sampling method and Raman spectroscopy: A preliminary investigation

Maurizio Becucci et al.

Summary: The presence of plastic in Italian river system is increasing, and it is important to understand their different sources. This study focuses on the contribution of wastewater treatment plants to microplastics released into the river system and develops methods for their detection. The study found that the main wastewater treatment plant in Florence releases about 35 kg of microplastics per day into the River Arno.

The potential effects of microplastic pollution on human digestive tract cells

Yuting Zhang et al.

Summary: Environmental microplastics can enter the human body through food and have negative effects on organism health. In this study, different sizes of polystyrene particles were examined for their effects on human colonic epithelial cells and small intestinal epithelial cells. The uptake of nanosized polystyrene particles was found to be more potential than microsized particles, and the amount of uptake was proportional to the exposure time. The polystyrene particles had no significant effect on cell viability and apoptosis, but the high concentration showed low toxicity to oxidative stress levels and mitochondrial membrane potential. Additionally, the membrane damage caused by microsized particles was significantly higher than that of nanosized particles.

Inhalation toxicity of polystyrene micro(nano)plastics using modified OECD TG 412

Dongyoung Lim et al.

Summary: Through a 14-day inhalation exposure experiment on rats, significant alterations were observed on various physiological, hematological, and respiratory function markers under exposure to micro(nano)plastics. Additionally, an exposure concentration-dependent increase in inflammatory proteins in lung tissue was found. These results suggest that the health risks of inhalation-exposed micro(nano)plastics should not be overlooked, as molecular level alterations may lead to subsequent effects at higher levels.
