Rainbow darter (Etheostoma caeruleum) from a river impacted by municipal wastewater effluents have altered gut content microbiomes

Victoria E. Restivo et al.

Summary: The study found that the microbiome of fish gut content was altered downstream of WWTP effluent outfalls, potentially leading to negative health outcomes. Fish collected at different sites had distinct bacterial communities, with upstream samples dominant in Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, and downstream samples increasingly abundant in Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria.

Wastewater treatment works change the intestinal microbiomes of insectivorous bats

Calvin Mehl et al.

Summary: Mammals are born with a near-sterile intestinal tract and acquire their mothers' microbiome during birth. Various factors shape the intestinal microbe assemblage, and studies have found bats near wastewater treatment works exhibit greater microbial diversity.
