Cyanazine herbicide monitoring as a hazardous substance by a DNA nanostructure biosensor

Hassan Karimi-Maleh et al.

Summary: The research focused on monitoring cyanazine levels using an electrochemical strategy, synthesizing a Pt-Pd-CdO/SWCNTs composite and modifying a gold electrode for detection. The composite showed improved conductivity and lower charge-transfer resistance, allowing for monitoring of cyanazine at nanomolar concentrations. Differential pulse voltammograms indicated a linear dynamic range and detection limit, while molecular docking studies supported experimental results. The composite was successfully utilized for monitoring cyanazine in food and water samples.

Per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as a contaminant of emerging concern in surface water: A transboundary review of their occurrences and toxicity effects

Aditi Podder et al.

Summary: PFAS have been recognized as emerging contaminants by the US EPA, leading to advisory guidelines worldwide aimed at limiting their occurrences in aquatic environments, especially for PFOS and PFOA. Studies have shown that PFOA and PFOS concentrations in many surface water matrices exceed the US EPA health advisory level for lifetime exposure from drinking water.

A global systematic review, meta-analysis, and risk assessment of the concentration of vanadium in drinking water resources

Yasser Vasseghian et al.

Summary: The presence of toxic metal vanadium in water resources has raised concerns in international health. Meta-analysis showed that the concentration of vanadium in some countries exceeds safety standards, potentially posing negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Necessary control plans and effective removal techniques need to be implemented to mitigate the pollution risk of heavy metals like vanadium.

Comprehensive evaluation of organophosphate ester contamination in surface water and sediment of the Bohai Sea, China

Yanjie Qi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence and distribution of 14 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in surface water and sediment of the whole Bohai Sea. Results showed a wide range of concentrations for OPEs, but the ecological risks to aquatic organisms in the Bohai Sea were considered negligible.

The concentration of persistent organic pollutants in water resources: A global systematic review, meta-analysis and probabilistic risk assessment

Yasser Vasseghian et al.

Summary: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have destructive effects on aquatic ecosystems, affecting the concentration and distribution in water resources. Studies have shown that p,p'-DDT has the highest concentration in water resources, and the most heavily polluted countries with POPs include South Africa, India, and Turkey.

Spatial pattern analysis reveals multiple sources of organophosphorus flame retardants in coastal waters

Xiaozhong Gao et al.

Summary: This study reveals significant pollution of PFRs in the coasts of GBA, with multiple sources such as human settlement, wastewater, manufacture, construction industry, vehicles, and shipping transport correlated to the pollutions. Spatial pattern analysis based on statistical analysis proves to be a promising method for identifying pollution sources in large-scale areas.

A review on the occurrence of organophosphate flame retardants in the aquatic environment in China and implications for risk assessment

Mei-Hong Chen et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge on organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in aquatic environments, with a focus on their consumption, applications, ecotoxicity, and occurrence in China. Risk assessments based on measured concentrations show low ecological risk in most aquatic environments in China and a low risk to human health from drinking water and aquatic products. Gaps in knowledge and future research directions on OPFRs in aquatic environments are also identified.

A systematic review of freshwater microplastics in water and sediments: Recommendations for harmonisation to enhance future study comparisons

Hsuan-Cheng Lu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the widespread presence of microplastics in freshwater ecosystems across six continents, with significant variations in concentrations and types. However, inconsistencies in methods, analytical techniques, and reporting units between studies pose challenges for comprehensive synthesis. Standardizing reporting language, providing detailed information, and implementing comprehensive quality assurance protocols are recommended to enhance comparability and reliability in microplastic research.
