Simultaneous investigation of surface and canopy urban heat islands over global cities

Huilin Du et al.

Summary: Interpreting the similarities and dissimilarities in spatiotemporal variations and various controls between surface and canopy urban heat islands is critical for understanding their vertical structure. Analysis of 366 global cities shows that the annual mean SUHI intensity is generally higher than CUHI intensity, with variations observed in different climate zones. Urbanization increases diurnal temperature range based on land surface temperature but decreases it based on surface air temperature. Vegetation coverage and impervious surface percentage have different impacts on SUHII and CUHII, with population size showing greater influence at night. Precipitation has varying effects on SUHII and CUHII depending on the time of day.

Diurnal and seasonal trends and associated determinants of surface urban heat islands in large Bangladesh cities

Ashraf Dewan et al.

Summary: This study focused on the intensity of surface urban heat island (SUHI) in five major cities in Bangladesh and found that factors such as dense city population, a high degree of imperviousness, and the absence of greenery may contribute to urban warming. The findings of this study will help in developing effective local-scale climate change adaptation plans for the projected substantial increase in urban population in Bangladesh in the future.

Diurnal evolution of urban tree temperature at a city scale

Thuy Trang Vo et al.

Summary: Despite the lack of research on the diurnal evolution of urban trees' surface temperature at a city-wide scale, a study on New York City reveals significant spatial variation in canopy temperature during daytime, influenced by greenspace coverage and distance to bluespaces. Surrounding buildings play an asymmetric role in modulating canopy temperature, with reduced daytime warming and reduced nocturnal cooling. This study demonstrates the potential for using space-borne observations and statistical methods to explore urban trees' response to local climate across cities, advancing science and technology for urban forest management.

The Impact of COVID-19 on CO2 Emissions in the Los Angeles and Washington DC/Baltimore Metropolitan Areas

Vineet Yadav et al.

Summary: Responses to COVID-19 have led to unintended reductions in city-scale carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The study on CO2 emissions in Los Angeles and Washington DC/Baltimore during March and April 2020 reveals the advantages of atmospheric CO2 observations in providing timely insights into rapidly changing emissions patterns.

A model for urban biogenic CO2 fluxes: Solar-Induced Fluorescence for Modeling Urban biogenic Fluxes (SMUrF v1)

Dien Wu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the challenges in estimating fossil fuel carbon dioxide emissions in urban areas due to biogenic carbon exchanges. By developing a simple model representation, it was possible to estimate ecosystem respiration and gross primary production across cities globally. Through advanced data analysis and modeling, the study provides valuable insights into the dynamics of biogenic carbon fluxes in urban environments.
