Fate and effects of microplastics in wastewater treatment processes

Mengjie Wu et al.

Summary: MPs have been proven to be harmful to the environment and humans, with wastewater treatment plants being a significant source of their release. Secondary treatment is the most efficient process for removing MPs, but their presence can impact reagent dosage, nitrogen conversion rate, and membrane fouling in wastewater treatment processes. Additionally, the effects of MPs on activated sludge mainly influence nitrification and denitrification processes, sludge digestion, and microbial communities. Further research is needed to fully understand the interactions and impacts of MPs on wastewater treatment processes.
