The results of testing and operating the Arktika-M highly elliptical orbit hydrometeorological space system are presented in the article, along with a discussion on the advantages of highly elliptical orbits and the main characteristics and tasks of the Arktika-M No. 1 satellite payload. The description of the ground-based segment and resulting information products required for solving problems for the benefit of the socioeconomic development of northern Russia is also provided.
