Carbon sequestration benefits of the grain for Green Program in the hilly red soil region of southern China

Xiaoqian Hu et al.

Summary: Soil erosion disrupts the global carbon cycle and is a complex environmental issue. Revegetation can help reduce carbon emissions by controlling soil erosion and increase carbon sequestration by fixing carbon in vegetation and soil. The Grain for Green Program in China, the largest ecological restoration program in the world, has shown positive impacts on carbon sequestration services, with an increasing trend in total carbon sequestration over the years. Unused land converted to forest land was found to be the most effective land-use change for carbon sequestration.

A land-based approach for climate change mitigation in the livestock sector

Maria Vincenza Chiriaco et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential of sustainable land management in reducing GHG emissions from agriculture, forestry and other land uses. By implementing a land-based approach at a small-scale rural landscape level, it is possible to achieve carbon neutral livestock systems by offsetting emissions and implementing sustainable land-use options. The results from a case study in Italy demonstrate the significant contribution of the land sector to climate change mitigation when sustainable practices are applied.

Planting urban trees to improve quality of life? The life satisfaction impacts of urban afforestation

Benjamin A. Jones

Summary: The study demonstrates that the MillionTreesNYC afforestation program in New York City had a positive impact on individual's life satisfaction during the first 3 years, with the effects growing in strength as more trees are planted and no effects observed during months with deciduous trees lacking foliage. The externality generated by MillionTreesNYC between 2007 and 2010 was equivalent to a $505 increase in average per capita monthly household income, highlighting the important implications for global urban afforestation policies.
