Components design and performance analysis of a novel compressed carbon dioxide energy storage system: A pathway towards realizability

Pan Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel compressed carbon dioxide energy storage system, designing the carbon dioxide compressor and all heat exchangers, and investigating the system performances under design and off-design conditions. The roundtrip efficiency in constant pressure mode is 64.96%, while in variable pressure mode it can reach 67.37%. The increase in load level results in a raised energy density in constant pressure mode, with an optimal value at 65.16% in roundtrip efficiency. In variable pressure mode, the turbine inlet temperature has a positive effect on system energy density, while the roundtrip efficiency exhibits a parabolic trend.

A multi-objective optimization model for fast electric vehicle charging stations with wind, PV power and energy storage

Baojun Sun

Summary: The paper studies the optimal design for fast EV charging stations with wind, PV power and energy storage system (FEVCS-WPE), which determines the capacity configuration of components and the power scheduling strategy. A multi-objective optimization model is proposed with minimum objectives of cost of electricity and pollution emissions, which is solved by a hybrid optimization algorithm combining MOPSO and TOPSIS. The proposed method shows faster computation speed and higher solution quality compared with simulated annealing and genetic algorithm.

Energy Harvesting and Water Saving in Arid Regions via Solar PV Accommodation in Irrigation Canals

Ayman Alhejji et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a practical approach to reduce water evaporation in the Egyptian irrigation system by covering canals with solar photovoltaic panels, while also considering factors such as energy cost, net present value, and greenhouse gas emissions to develop a technoeconomically feasible grid-connected renewable integrated system. By utilizing an innovative metaheuristic algorithm and comparing results with genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization, the optimal sizing and configuration of the on-grid solar PV accommodation for irrigation systems can be determined to minimize impact on the levelized cost of energy.

Ecological impacts of run -of -river hydropower plants ? Current status and future prospects on the brink of energy transition

Alban Kuriqi et al.

Summary: The widespread perception of small run-of-river hydropower plants as renewable energy sources has led to their global proliferation, but such schemes may have negative impacts on fluvial ecosystems. Different types of small run-of-river hydropower schemes have varying ecological impacts, with diversion weir and pondage schemes being less eco-friendly compared to dam-toe schemes. Environmental flows are crucial for ecosystem conservation in rivers affected by hydropower operations.

The feasibility survey of an autonomous renewable seawater reverse osmosis system with underwater compressed air energy storage

Pan Zhao et al.

Summary: The water scarcity issue is becoming increasingly prominent due to rapid population growth and industrialization. Desalination, as an energy-intensive technology, has gained more attention and shifted towards renewable sources for a sustainable future. This paper proposes an autonomous renewable seawater reverse osmosis system supported by underwater compressed air energy storage. The system utilizes wind turbines and solar photovoltaic cells as primary power sources, with underwater compressed air energy storage acting as a buffer to manage power generation and consumption. Simulation results show a high level of reliability in power supply and water provision, with room for improvement in system performance through adjustments in power source configuration, energy storage capacity, membrane area, and turbine height.

Pietro Elia Campana et al.

Summary: The research investigated the feasibility of designing high renewable share wastewater treatment plants by integrating photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, multi-energy storage technologies, and reverse osmosis tertiary treatment. The optimal system integration was found to achieve a renewable share of 70%, corresponding to the lowest net present cost. The developed model is flexible and can be applied to other relevant case studies, promoting a more sustainable wastewater treatment sector and enhancing local renewable energy conversion.
