Hydrothermal carbonization of biomass and waste: A review

Judith Gonzalez-Arias et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization is a promising method for producing renewable biofuels by treating various biomass wastes at lower temperatures. It can generate gases, liquids, and solids, with the solid product being the main one used as a substitute for fossil coal. Integration with other processes like anaerobic digestion, catalytic conversion, and membrane technology is crucial for commercial profitability.

Stability of SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses in the environment and on common touch surfaces and the influence of climatic conditions: A review

Hamada A. Aboubakr et al.

Summary: Global efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 are unprecedented, yet confirmed cases are increasing rapidly. Effective preventive measures are urgently needed, focusing on understanding the virus's transmission routes, environmental stability, and persistence on various surfaces. SARS-CoV-2 may be transmitted through the air and poses potential risks of faecal-oral, foodborne, and waterborne transmission.

Hydrothermal carbonization of microalgae for phosphorus recycling from wastewater to crop-soil systems as slow-release fertilizers

Qingnan Chu et al.

Summary: Recycling phosphorus from wastewater to crop-soil systems using microalgae and HTC technology is a sustainable strategy to improve plant PUE. Charring microalgae biomass into hydrochars promotes the transformation of soluble and exchangeable P into Fe/Al-bound P, enhancing soil P availability and improving PUE. Application of hydrochars from microalgae-derived biomass resulted in slow and persistent release of P, leading to improved wheat PUE and yield compared to chemical fertilizer.

COVID-19 infection risk from exposure to aerosols of wastewater treatment plants

Sahar Gholipour et al.

Summary: The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and the potential health risks from exposure to virus-contaminated aerosols were analyzed. The study found a relatively high risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection for wastewater workers via exposure to viral aerosols, with an estimated annual infection risk higher than the WHO recommended level. Further research is needed to determine the role of wastewater in COVID-19 transmission.

Conversion of heavy metal-containing biowaste from phytoremediation site to value-added solid fuel through hydrothermal carbonization

Jongkeun Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrothermal carbonization was used to reduce heavy metal concentrations in sunflower residues and improve the energy-related properties of the produced hydrochar. Optimal HTC temperatures for energy retention efficiency were found to be between 200 and 220 degrees Celsius. Hydrochar, with low nitrogen and ash content, can be considered a clean energy source for sustainable disposal and utilization of contaminant-containing biowastes.

Hydrothermal conversion of different lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks-Effect of the process conditions on hydrochar structures

Fatih Gulec et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrothermal processing of five biomass feedstocks under different conditions revealed structural changes in biomass, categorized into three groups based on lignocellulosic composition. The yield of hydrochar was influenced by the initial structure of the biomass, with higher lignin content biomass showing lower transformation and lower hydrochar yield. Additionally, a novel technique called displacement was introduced to quantify the impact of hydrothermal treatment on biomass structure and reactivity.
