Evolution of residual stress behavior in selective laser melting (SLM) of 316L stainless steel through preheating and in-situ re-scanning techniques

Saad Waqar et al.

Summary: The premature fractures, cracks, distortions, and delamination in selective laser melting manufactured components are among the most prominent challenges. Residual stresses are the main causes of these issues. Post processing techniques are commonly used to reduce these stresses, but they increase production time and costs. Therefore, developing in-process techniques to reduce residual stresses is crucial for large-scale production of metallic components.

Thermo-mechanical modelling of stress relief heat treatments after laser-based powder bed fusion

David De Baere et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of stress relief heat treatment in laser-based powder bed fusion post-processing, modeling the impact of post-processing parameters on residual stress. The results show that heat treatment can alleviate residual stress in parts, allowing for the selection of optimal heat treatment conditions based on simulation results and reducing the need for extensive experimentation.

Numerical and experimental investigations of built orientation dependent Johnson-Cook model for selective laser melting manufactured AlSi10Mg

Murat Akturk et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the material constitutive parameters of the widely used aluminum alloy AlSi10Mg, using SLM technology to manufacture tensile samples and conducting quasi-static and high temperature tensile tests to determine the Johnson-Cook material model. The comparison between numerically simulated tensile results and experimental results shows a maximum error of around 7.5%, demonstrating the accuracy of the established material model.

Selective laser melting of Ti6Al4V alloy: Process parameters, defects and post-treatments

Anil Kumar Singla et al.

Summary: This review critically examines the important contributions related to selective laser melting (SLM) process parameters, defects, and post-processing techniques for Ti6Al4V alloy. Proper selection of process parameters and post-treatment methods are crucial in improving mechanical behavior of SLMed components. Efforts have been made to identify correlations between SLM parameters and defects, as well as analyzing the impact of post-processing approaches on mechanical behavior and biocompatibility of SLM-fabricated Ti6Al4V alloy.

FEM analysis of thermal and residual stress profile in selective laser melting of 316L stainless steel

Saad Waqar et al.

Summary: High temperature gradients and residual stresses are major challenges in selective laser melting. Understanding the influence of process parameters on thermal and residual stress profiles is crucial. A study using a 3D FEM model found that increasing laser power or decreasing scanning speed raises maximum melt pool temperature and increasing laser power or speed raises cooling rates and residual stresses. Increasing hatch spacing leads to increased max melt pool temp and decreased residual stress.
