Troubles in Tuva: Patterns of perimortem trauma in a nomadic community from Southern Siberia (second to fourth c.CE)

Marco Milella et al.

Summary: This study provides new data on violence among steppe nomads during the first centuries CE, indicating that traumas were more frequent in males and not correlated with age. The findings offer insights into the effects of political instability on the life of people inhabiting Eastern Eurasia during this time period.

Bone need not remain an elephant in the room for radiocarbon dating

Salvador Herrando-Perez

Summary: The variability in bone C-14 dating results is largely due to different laboratory pretreatment protocols. A survey of 132 experts from 25 countries showed that while many were wary of contamination, a significant portion relied on laboratories to choose the pretreatment method and could not rank the reliability of different methods. Ultrafiltration was popular, while purification by XAD resins was mainly used by American researchers. Amino acid hydroxyproline isolation and dating was considered the most reliable but expensive and time-consuming.

14C INTERCOMPARISON EXERCISE ON BONES AND IVORY SAMPLES: IMPLICATIONS FOR FORENSICS

G. Quarta et al.

Summary: The application of accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS C-14) dating in forensics is limited by the complex interpretation of results, despite the high precision analysis possible. Results of an intercomparison exercise between three AMS laboratories in Italy, Hungary, and Switzerland within an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) coordinated research project demonstrate high reproducibility and consistency in the experimental determinations.

The Kokel of Southern Siberia: New data on a post-Xiongnu material culture

Timur Sadykov et al.

Summary: From the end of the Xiongnu Empire to the establishment of the first Turkic Khaganate, Southern Siberia saw the emergence of the distinctive Kokel culture. This culture, largely independent of social hierarchy, consisted of small tribal groups engaging in frequent violent local conflicts, setting it apart from the Xiongnu material culture.
