Low-temperature gas-phase formation of indene in the interstellar medium

Srinivas Doddipatla et al.

Summary: This study reveals a new mechanism for the formation of aromatic molecules with five-membered rings such as indene, shedding light on the low-temperature chemistry of carbon in interstellar and combustion systems. The incorporation of a five-membered ring through the MACA mechanism may eventually lead to the formation of three-dimensional PAHs and fullerenes, offering a new concept for carbon chemistry in our galaxy.

Radiation-induced transformations of HCN•••C2H2, HCN•••C2H4 and HCN•••C2H6 complexes in noble gas matrices: Synthesis of C3HxN molecules in cryogenic media

Mariia A. Lukianova et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the formation of nitrites and isonitriles from matrix isolated intermolecular complexes through direct radiation-induced synthesis at 6 K. In addition to synthetic products, irradiation also results in dehydrogenation and isomerization of the initial complexes, leading to the formation of propionitrile and cyanoacetylene. These results suggest new possible routes for the formation of these molecules in complex astrochemical ices.

Aromatics and Cyclic Molecules in Molecular Clouds: A New Dimension of Interstellar Organic Chemistry

Michael C. McCarthy et al.

Summary: Astrochemistry explores the intersection of astronomy, chemistry, and molecular physics, identifying over 200 familiar and exotic molecules in the interstellar medium based on precise laboratory data. While evidence of the basic building blocks of chemistry on earth is scarce in the radio band, a peculiar structural motif with highly unsaturated carbon in a chainlike arrangement is common in space. Recent studies indicate that aromatic chemistry is likely widespread in the earliest stages of star formation.

Discovery of the Pure Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Indene (c-C9H8) with GOTHAM Observations of TMC-1

Andrew M. Burkhardt et al.

Summary: The study of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in interstellar and protostellar sources has been challenging, but recently the first interstellar detection of a pure hydrocarbon PAH, indene, provides new insights into the formation mechanisms of this important class of molecules. Observations and modeling suggest that the abundance of indene in TMC-1 is higher than expected, indicating potential inaccuracies in current astrochemical models and opening up possibilities for further discoveries of related species in dark clouds.

C2H2•••CO complex and its radiation-induced transformations: a building block for cold synthetic astrochemistry

Pavel Zasimov et al.

Summary: This study investigates radiation-induced synthetic chemistry in a C2H2-CO system at the molecular level using a matrix isolation approach. It shows that X-ray radiolysis of the C2H2 ・ CO complex leads to the formation of various C-3 species, with ethynyl radical formation as a minor process. The study suggests that the complex may serve as a building block for cold astrochemistry in mixed interstellar ices and discusses the implications of the results for astrochemistry.

Direct evidence for a single-step radiation-induced assembling of benzene ring from acetylene trimer at cryogenic temperatures

Mariia A. Lukianova et al.

Summary: The discovery of carbon-rich species in space, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and fullerenes, is a significant finding in molecular astrophysics. This study reports direct evidence of benzene formation from acetylene trimer through radiation-induced processes. The importance of molecular organization in the chemical history of the Universe is emphasized through this finding.
