Ocean-Driven and Topography-Controlled Nonlinear Glacier Retreat During the Holocene: Southwestern Ross Sea, Antarctica

R. S. Jones et al.

Summary: Recent research used ice-flow modeling to investigate ice sheet mass loss in the southwestern Ross Sea. The study found that bed topography controlled the spatial pattern of grounding-line retreat, while ocean thermal forcing determined the timing of ice loss. It was concluded that enhanced ocean-driven melt during the Early-to-Mid Holocene may indicate the presence of warm ocean waters in the region.

The large MIS 4 and long MIS 2 glacier maxima on the southern tip of South America

Carly Peltier et al.

Summary: The study identified the timing and structure of the last two major glaciations and the last termination based on well-preserved glacial deposits in southernmost South America. By analyzing Be-10 surface exposure data from Moraine boulders, researchers revealed the stages of glacier stability and retreat during the ice age maximum and advance periods.

A maximum in global glacier extent during MIS 4

Alice M. Doughty et al.

Summary: The discrepancy between global ice volume and ice extent during Marine Isotope Stage 4 can likely be attributed to the growth of the North American ice sheets. The dominant role of North American ice sheets in global ice volume, sea level, and benthic delta O-18 signals may result in a skewed picture of global climate.

Evolution of mean ocean temperature in Marine Isotope Stage 4

Summary: Research suggests that the majority of ocean cooling between the last interglacial and glacial period occurred during MIS 5, with similar cold conditions observed in MIS 4 as in MIS 2. Ocean cooling can explain the decrease in atmospheric CO2 and the increase in δ18O across MIS 5.
