The in situ formation of molecular and warm ionized gas triggered by hot galactic outflows

Philipp Girichidis et al.

Summary: Molecular outflows in star-forming galaxies are observed in small and large systems at low and high redshift, but their physical origin is still unclear. High-resolution simulations show that a magnetized wind may trigger H-2 formation in clouds with densities greater than 0.5 cm(-3), converting up to 3% of the initial cloud mass into molecular gas before dispersal.

Observational Evidence for a Thick Disk of Dark Molecular Gas in the Outer Galaxy

Michael P. Busch et al.

Summary: The serendipitous discovery of extremely broad, faint, and ubiquitous thermal OH emission towards the second quadrant of the outer Galaxy, revealed through observations with the Green Bank Telescope, suggests large-scale Galactic structure. The smooth distribution of OH in radial velocity, similar to H I distribution, indicates that molecular gas in the outer Galaxy is significantly more extended than previously thought. The existence of a thick disk of diffuse molecular gas in the outer Galaxy, previously undetected in all-sky surveys, implies new insights into the galactic environment.

Shock-multicloud interactions in galactic outflows - II. Radiative fractal clouds and cold gas thermodynamics

W. E. Banda-Barragan et al.

Summary: Galactic winds play a crucial role in transporting material out of galaxies, and simulations show that radiative heating and cooling create a complex multiphase flow with rain-like morphology. The interplay between shock heating, turbulence, and radiative processes leads to the formation of dense gas cloudlets and filaments, explaining the presence of high-velocity HI gas in the Galactic Center outflow. This cycle sustains fast-moving dense gas by aiding condensation from warm clouds and the hot wind, with most of the mass concentrated in the dense gas phases.

SOFIA 2-an automated, parallel H I source finding pipeline for the WALLABY survey

T. Westmeier et al.

Summary: SOFIA 2 is a fully automated 3D source finding pipeline for the WALLABY extragalactic HI survey with ASKAP, implemented in the c programming language and utilizing OpenMP for multithreading. It has substantially improved speed and reduced memory footprint compared to its predecessor, allowing real-time processing of large imaging data volumes. Performance tests using mock galaxies in genuine ASKAP data show near-100% completeness and reliability above a certain signal-to-noise ratio threshold.
