Longitudinal relationships between cognition and functioning over 2 years in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder: a cross-lagged panel model approach with the FACE-BD cohort

Mickael Ehrminger et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between cognition and functioning in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder over a two-year period. The results showed that cognition moderately predicts functional outcome one year later, while psychosocial functioning does not predict later cognitive performance.

Neurocognitive heterogeneity in patients with bipolar disorder and their unaffected relatives: associations with emotional cognition

Hanne Lie Kjaerstad et al.

Summary: Recent research found that patients with bipolar disorder (BD) exhibit diverse neurocognitive impairments, which are associated with affective cognition deficits. This study replicated previous findings of neurocognitive subgroups in BD patients, and revealed a link between neurocognition patterns and impairments in affective cognition. Additionally, first-degree relatives of cognitively impaired patients showed signs of inherited risk for BD.

Cognitive subgroups in first episode bipolar I disorder: Relation to clinical and brain volumetric variables

Trisha Chakrabarty et al.

Summary: Distinct cognitive subgroups are observable in patients with long duration bipolar I disorder, possibly reflecting underlying pathophysiological differences. The study applied latent class analysis to cognitive test scores in first episode BDI patients to identify cognitive heterogeneity at illness onset. Results showed a globally impaired subgroup possibly characterized by unique neurodevelopmental pathologic processes.

Long-term trajectory of cognitive performance in people with bipolar disorder and controls: 6-year longitudinal study

Timea Sparding et al.

Summary: The study found that cognitive functioning in patients with bipolar disorder remained stable over a 6-year period and evolved similarly to healthy controls, with no significant differences in cognitive change between the two groups. Subgroup analysis did not reveal any subgroups more vulnerable to cognitive decline.
